HarperCollins is editing them.

So, obviously the sale is no longer on, since the Today it was the Big Deal of is over . But yes, they were the HarperCollins editions, and thank you for the info. Are the US HarperCollins editions also adulterated?

If you want to read some Maigret in the original French, here's a cross-post to the Forum Français, where an omnibus of late-ish Maigret titles (ninth of ten ominbuses) is on sale at Kindle US and UK.

I would say yes giving the article in the New York Post.

Quote:
HarperCollins has edited — and in some cases scrapped entire passages — from new editions of Christie’s beloved detective novels, Poirot and Miss Marple, the Telegraph reported.

But to be sure, comparing a current US version with an old version (not edited) would do.

Thanks! And here's an earlier article that is a little more factual (i.e. doesn't call it a "woke purge" in the headline): https://www.theguardian.com/books/20...nsive-language

And I only wish I had time to compare some editions to see what was really changed - maybe when someday (hopefully), I get to retire.

But still good to be aware of

Castle in the Air is one of Donald E Westlake's caper novels - it reminds me of The Pink Panther movies, or the movie version of Hopscotch. It's on sale for $0.99 at Kindle and Kobo US right now.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088QLNJFZ
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/castle-in-the-air-8

Spoiler:
Quote:
Four teams of international thieves race through Paris to steal a king’s ransom from the walls of a disassembled castle.

When four groups of international heist artists team up to pull off the theft of the century—stealing an entire castle, and the treasure hidden in its walls—what could possibly go wrong?

Well, consider this: none of the master thieves speak each other’s languages . . . and no one knows precisely where the loot is stashed . . . and every one of them wants to steal it all for him or herself.

It’s Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Donald E. Westlake at his wildest, a breathless slapstick chase through the streets of Paris only one step ahead of the law—and each other.

I had an ARC of the Hard Case Crime e-book version of this and found it to be fun, but with no added value other than the fun. Which can be okay - sometimes we just need some fun. My full review is on my blog.

Excited to see all of Janet Neel’s Francesca Wilson & John McLeish series reissued and the complete box set of 7 on sale for .99. The original series first was Death’s Bright Angel and all the books had Death in the title; looks like they’ve all been renamed with Fatal in the title.

Ooooh, me too! I really like that series, especially the part in one book where Francesca? someone? feeds an older boy tenor gin to help him sing a bit longer before his imminent voice change!

I had a few of these from when they were "Ostara Publishing", but hardly ever went on sale - now they are "Joffe Ostara", and on sale. I hope that bodes well for a couple of other Ostara authors I like. And at $0.99 for all, I don't care that I already had a few...

Foul Play Suspected by John Wyndham is $2 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
England, 1935: Phyllida Shiffer’s marriage has just ended in divorce. She heads home, expecting to be welcomed with open arms by her father, a brilliant (if slightly distracted) scientist. But her father’s house is locked up; he is nowhere to be found; and there are suspicious men who seem to think that Phyllida herself might hold the key to her father’s latest scientific discovery. . . .

God Save the Mark by Donald E. Westlake is $1.99 at Kobo US and, possibly, at Amazon US. (I say "possibly" because at Amazon I'm shown two different prices.)

This book won the Edgar Award for best novel in 1968.

There are only a couple more days for this month's Amazon Prime "First Reads", but there are a few that look interesting, if you haven't already picked:

Malibu Burning, Sharpe & Walker #1, by Lee Goldberg, I've read a couple of his other books, and they were pretty good, if a bit thrillerish: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B2P7PWDD

Redemption, Eva "Lightning Dance" Duran #1, by Deborah J Ledford, characterized as a police procedural: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BM1VNFP9

Salthouse Place, by Jamie Lee Sogn, suspense: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BQWWY7W9

The Shallows, by Holly Craig, domestic suspense: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B95FT319
