I'm so sorry Patricia, I hope things work out.

It seems the department could have been re-structured into equivalent full-time posts and staff allowed to reapply as job sharers. Then they would have received the benefits of full-time employees.

I have other examples from other companies in other industries. I won't bore you with them. They all tell a tale of Government mandated rate for services that often prices the unskilled young worker out of a job.
I'd say overall the problem is people wanting simple solutions to complex problems (and wanting everything to be cheap, of course). Raise the minimm wage, and the costs of "economy" items will all go up, necessarily pushing the required amount of the "living wage." And yet, the system we have depends on the labor of the "working poor." And sometimes regulations can help businesses do something they feel is right and want to be able to do, but can't afford to if their competitors do not also have to comply.

I don't think there are easy answers. In some situations, there may not be answers at all, in the sense that some inequalities will always be with us. But I don't accept that there is nothing that can be done to improve the situation, either.

grrrrrr!!!! I have a very hard time shutting people down! the landlord's brother's *special friend* showed up on Saturday and attached herself to me at the hip. she wanted to "hang" all weekend and is still at the house this morning. she called me at work wanting to know what I wanted for dinner. I told her that I rarely eat in the hot weather, (we are having incredibly unusual hot HOT weather here, in the 90's!!!!) so not to cook anything and that there were plenty of leftovers in the fridge anyway. I got home to find a steaming bowl of chicken (the chicken I had planned on for chicken alfredo) and her stirring a pan full of mole sauce (which I detest). "you can shred the chicken!" she chirped at me. I was sooooooo upset! all I wanted to do was get out of my clothes and kick back! I diced the chicken and told her that I appreciated what she had done, but I was quite serious about not eating in the heat.

she pouted the rest of the night and I attempted more or less unsuccessfully to hide in my room. ARGH! I need to take bitchy lessons!

There are advantages ti being a grouchy old antisocial man as I am. I would have told her to "Go home!" & probably made lots of enemies.

ohhhhh this is going to be a day.... our doors are open as there are so many contractors running around upgrading our fire suppression system. it is 90 plus in here already at 9 in the morning. my walls are to be textured later and this guy is taping the walls behind me. ripping the tape off is incredibly loud and driving me NUTS!

Ick. Whatever you're paying to rent this room, it's too much.

Is that typical for your area? Because I'd be looking for a new place to live at this point....

this is a pretty expensive area, but what my "rent" covers is all of my utilities, and it is supposed to cover about half my food. unfortunately I have been paying for EVERYONE'S food and the landlord and I need to do a sit down on that. I also have my dog and cat with me and they are very happy. that is worth a fair amount to me... but the sanity is also necessary. I know I need to get things sorted.

it can be really difficult sharing living space with other people, particularly when you don't know them very well. it's important to set down some "house rules" to make sure everyone understands what is okay.

when i was sharing an appartment with 3 other people, we all took turns doing the shopping. we had a list taped to up in the kitchen with 1 column for each roommate, and would write down the amount we spent each time. every couple of weeks or so we would add up it all up ; the total amount would be divided by 4, and whoever had spent less in the grocery store would pay the difference directly to the people who had done the shopping, so nobody felt cheated. and all the food was communal, so there was never a problem of "hey ! you drank my milk again !!!"

we also took turns cooking for everyone and doing the washing up, and cleaning the common areas (each person was responsible for their own room though). it worked really well, but mainly because nobody tried to get out of doing their share. it was a really good situation.

after that i shared a flat with 2 people who insisted that everyone was on their own : we each had our own area in the refrigerator and had to label our food. this led to such ridiculous situations as having 3 bottles of olive oil, 3 boxes of salt, etc. which is really kind of pointless i think. but that was a very bad experience and put me off having roommates, and i haven't done that since.

yeah Zelda, we are supposed to be communal as well and I don't mind that. the landlord is supposed to be making adjustments to my rent accordingly but it hasn't happened yet (I just hit a month there). this place was total bachelor pad/frat house fare when I got there. if it were left up to them the pantry would be chilie beans and mac and cheese. they totally love that I'm cooking, and I like to. I just need the landlord to get off his arse and do the accounting. and I need his brother's *friend* to unhook from my hip. all 3 of them, the landlord, the brother and the friend show up whenever they feel like it and stay at the house for however long they feel like it.... weird sort of lifestyle. pretty weird for me too. I feel like there is a revolving door.

hm, yes, sounds a bit unorthodox. and probably means you need some clear house rules even more than the average place.

well, the "list with 4 (or however many) columns" system is pretty basic, but it worked really well for us. i don't know if it's sophisticated enough to count as "accounting" but it could solve the problem.

and if you like cooking and do it all (or even most) of the time, if everyone appreciates that it's great but it should be worth a bit of a reduction in your rent, i think... definitely time to talk to the landlord. good luck ! i hope you get things sorted out soon.
