The complete Mrs Pargeter series (8 titles) by Simon Brett is on sale for .99.
Complete for now, anyway. In looking up info on Fantastic Fiction I see there’s a new one coming out in October from his old publisher, Severn House, for $18.99.
Makes the set look like even more of a bargain!

Today's Daily Deal at Kindle US is No Plan B by Lee Child and Andrew Child. It's the most recent in the series, at least until a new one comes out in late October. It's on sale for $2.99 at Kindle US, and matched at Kobo US.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09PMZ93DT
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/no-plan-b-7

Spoiler:
Quote:
In Gerrardsville, Colorado, a woman dies under the wheels of a moving bus. The death is ruled a suicide. But Jack Reacher saw what really happened: A man in a gray hoodie and jeans, moving stealthily, pushed the victim to her demise—before swiftly grabbing the dead woman’s purse and strolling away.

When another homicide is ruled an accident, Reacher knows this is no coincidence. With a killer on the loose, Reacher has no time to waste to track down those responsible.

But Reacher is unaware that these crimes are part of something much larger and more far-reaching: an arsonist out for revenge, a foster kid on the run, a cabal of powerful people involved in a secret conspiracy with many moving parts. There is no room for error, but they make a grave one. They don’t consider Reacher a threat. “There’s too much at stake to start running from shadows.” But Reacher isn’t a shadow. He is flesh and blood. And relentless when it comes to making things right.

For when the threat is Reacher, there is No Plan B.

The Last One Left by John D. MacDonald is $2.99 at Amazon, B&N and Kobo US.

This is not part of his Travis McGee series. It is a standalone.

Quote:
Murder at sea. No survivors, no evidence, no loose ends. Only a boatload of cash left for the taking. In this explosive novel from the author of the Travis McGee series, nothing is certain—not with enough money at stake to change a dozen lives . . . or end them.

Introduction by Dean Koontz

Crissy Harkinson knows all about the cash that left the Gold Coast of Florida, headed for the Bahamas on board a pleasure boat. It came from Texas, unrecorded, intended as a bribe. Now it is Crissy’s last chance for the big score she’s been working toward for years, using her brains and her body.

Then other people get involved, including a Texas lawyer too cool to commit himself to anything or anybody, a beautiful Cuban maid who might not be as silly as she seems, and a pitifully broken girl, adrift and unconscious in a tiny boat on the giant blue river of the Gulf Stream. Turns out these are shark-infested waters. And none of them are going down without a fight.

Oops. duplicate. I will mention that I just finished the first book of the Mrs. Pargeter series and excellent cozy mystery set in early 1980s England. Great pace, short book, good mystery.

Kathryn Harkup, whose A is for Arsenic: The Poisons of Agatha Christie was on sale a while back, now has another book on sale, which probably doesn't technically fit here either, but which really actually does seem to fit: Death By Shakespeare: Snakebites, Stabbings and Broken Hearts. It's on sale for $1.99 at Kindle US right now...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07YZS3RHV

Spoiler:
Quote:
William Shakespeare found dozens of different ways to kill off his characters, and audiences today still enjoy the same reactions – shock, sadness, fear – that they did more than 400 years ago when these plays were first performed. But how realistic are these deaths, and did Shakespeare have the knowledge to back them up?

In the Bard's day death was a part of everyday life. Plague, pestilence and public executions were a common occurrence, and the chances of seeing a dead or dying body on the way home from the theatre were high. It was also a time of important scientific progress. Shakespeare kept pace with anatomical and medical advances, and he included the latest scientific discoveries in his work, from blood circulation to treatments for syphilis. He certainly didn't shy away from portraying the reality of death on stage, from the brutal to the mundane, and the spectacular to the silly.

Elizabethan London provides the backdrop for Death by Shakespeare, as Kathryn Harkup turns her discerning scientific eye to the Bard and the varied and creative ways his characters die. Was death by snakebite as serene as Shakespeare makes out? Could lack of sleep have killed Lady Macbeth? Can you really murder someone by pouring poison in their ear? Kathryn investigates what actual events may have inspired Shakespeare, what the accepted scientific knowledge of the time was, and how Elizabethan audiences would have responded to these death scenes. Death by Shakespeare will tell you all this and more in a rollercoaster of Elizabethan carnage, poison, swordplay and bloodshed, with an occasional death by bear-mauling for good measure.

I read a bunch of Gault's Brock (The Rock) Callahan books many years (decades) ago, and have fond but faded memories of them. But I kind of wonder how they've stood up to time...

Homemade Sin is the third in the Callahan Garrity series by Kathy Hogan Trocheck, who also used the pen name Mary Kay Andrews. It's $1.99 right now in the US. Per SYKM, the first couple of books in this series were finalist for various awards...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0017098E6
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/hom...rity-mystery-a

Spoiler:
Quote:
“The prose is tart and lively, the storytelling swift-paced, and the large cast and multiple plot lines deftly handled.” — Atlanta Journal-Constitution

In the third book in this acclaimed series, Callahan Garrity runs afoul of her own family when she insists on investigating the carjacking death of the cousin she idolized.

Some people might call Callahan Garrity nosy, but she prefers to think of her tendency toward snooping as a healthy interest in the truth. So when news of her cousin Patti’s death reaches her, Callahan shakes off her House Mouse cleaning uniform to don her detective’s cap. It’s not that she doesn’t have confidence in the Atlanta police—she used to be among their ranks—it’s just that the crime seems too incongruous with Patti’s suburban life to be an accident.

Sorry, I don't know. I have all of these from ages ago, Agatha Christie books were among the first e-books I bought, so haven't bought these versions. Do you know which publisher is "editing" them?

A Detective in Love is the second in HRF Keating's Harriet Martens series. It's free right now at Kindle US and UK.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BG6HPYFV
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0BG6HPYFV

Spoiler:
Quote:
In the second DCI Harriet Martens novel, Harriet faces a high-profile case, yet finds herself distracted. Could love destroy her career?

Britain’s number one tennis star, Bubbles Xingara, has been murdered in the grounds of her luxurious home. Harriet is now in charge of a case that will have the world’s media – already massing for the start of Wimbledon – out in force. But it’s not the investigation that’s about to disrupt her life.

For it seems that the happily-married mother, known as the ‘Hard Detective’, has fallen passionately in love with a fellow officer.

As much a story of ethics and love as a detective novel, A Detective in Love does not flinch from exploring the challenges and choices Harriet faces as she navigates a murder investigation and her own thoroughly inconvenient emotions. This novel will please readers who enjoy thoughtful crime fiction and character-driven tales.
