Exclamation KOReader server down?
Just noticed my KOReader installations having all kinds of issues across multiple devices, seems to be having network timeouts reaching either the default sync server or the OTA service.

Observed behavior: whenever I try to push/pull sync progress on a device, it hangs for like half a minute before giving up. Same error when trying OTA. Also, since I have multiple devices all running KOReader, I have them configured to automatically keep progress in sync, resulting in very long delays when opening/closing documents and even going to sleep - presumably any time there is a progress sync.

Assuming this is a server side error? Confirmed this behavior across multiple devices and also confirmed that I can reach various OPDS services without any issues, so not a network issue on client side.

I can confirm that the sync server "sync.koreader.rocks" does not sync any progress. It is pingable though, but does not sync.
Also ota.koreader.rocks does not work, there are no OTA updates working.

When the sync.koreader.rocks server is not working this is a problem which makes KOreader quite unusable. The timeout when trying to sync blocks every other reading possibility e.g. going to the next page.

I do not understand why KOreader does not have a progress sync via Dropbox or Google drive or have a fall back sync server. The sync.koreader.rocks server is down quite often and this is really frustrating.

I know there are possibilities to setup my own server to sync the progress but this is only possible with a (for me) complicated Docker installation.

If there is a simple Apache solution with PHP to sync my private reading progress I would install it, but I have only found Docker solutions which cannot be installed on simple webspace servers.

If somebody can point me to an Apache+PHP solution I would be very grateful, the sync.koreader.rocks solution unfortunately is not stable as it seems.

Yes, the server ota.koreader.rocks has the same IP as sync.koreader.rocks.

As far as OTAs are concerned, you do have the option to switch to a mirror in-app, though (I maintain those, they're up ;o)).

My understanding is if the ota.koreader.rocks server is not working there are no new versions synced to the different mirrors.
So the mirrors reflect the last version before the OTA server went offline.
Is this correct?

A "sync.koreader.rocks" mirror server would be a God's gift.

Do you eventually know when the sync.koreader.rocks server will be available again? Can we assume on the 26th of August?

Yup, although actual build artifacts are available on gitlab if you really really really need. The server is responsible for signing Android APKs, though, so it may not be a great fit on that platform.

I can't really mirror it (both because it's down so I can't really access the data, and also the official implementation is a right PITA to deploy on my end anyway), but I've spun up a different instance of a different KOSync implementation, at https://kosync.ak-team.com:3042 if you *really* need *a* sync server, for some reason.

In these rare cases when I really need the bleeding edge nightly I just compile debug apk it has its own signature and can be updated when needed as long as GitHub is alive

Hmmm.

You just git cloned koreader, all its dependencies, setup'd JDK8, downloaded the entire android SDK/NDK and built the gazillion libraries. You ended up with a build tree of ~30GB without counting build prerequisites.

With all these burders I think it is not a solution/workaround for most users. But, for you? It might be fine but you already did 99'9999999% of the job.

You just need to generate your own signing key and use something like uber-apk-signer to sign the APK with your own keys and reach 100% of DIY

Yes, this is the cost I am ready to pay to be less online dependent when getting KOReader updates
Also, KOReader still isn’t for the faint hearted, especially nightlies
When everything is setup (once!), it is a matter of two commands (when I am experimenting):
git pull
.\kodev run android

No offense, I love KOReader exactly for its nerdiness! Thank you guys for making it such an accessible project
