While TTS may be disabled on the Secure MOBIPOCKET versions of these books, it works fine on my Kindle copies (Hobbit, Trilogy, Hurin).

Also with this error, you cannot remove the DRM.
It would appear that the problem has gotten corrected in the epub version from HarperCollins after purchasing it this morning. I also had no problems removing the DRM from it.

Does that mean if it's redownloaded from BooksOnBoard, you'll get the fixed version? The problem is that it should never have happened.

I can't answer that since I got my epub from HarperCollins. Your original post did not state the source/store of the original epub.

Of course I agree that it should never have happened. Who would be happy getting a bad book?

Mine decrypted fine and there was no problem with Chapter 7. I bought the epub from BooksOnBoard yesterday.

I too had been waiting for LOTR to appear in legitimate ebook formats for purchase - I have several pbook editions that weigh more than my cats - and was thrilled to read sirbruce's post on Sunday announcing their arrival.

Being somewhat apprehensive as to their quality (I too had downloaded Dune & HHGTG - only to have them removed from availability for "reformatting" issues) before launching into a grand re-read of the series - I eagerly perused the "Notes on the Text" section - and was greatly impressed - Yes! HarperCollins had done it right this time! So I punched those "Buy Now" buttons and purchased all the Tolkien from Amazon Sunday night. I then proudly showed my Kindle Home Page to a friend (who is still not convinced on the viability of ebooks) - who calmly pointed out "Tha Hobbit" listing to me.

After years of watching the Simpsons, I now personally know what it feels like to have Nelson pop up out of nowhere with his "Hah-Ha" to highlight my moment of mortification.

Also available at Waterstones

The Waterstones ebook store that Sony try to palm off on us UK users also has them available at 20% off

Singles - list £7.99 - discount £6.39 (~ $9.30)
Omnibus - list £19.99 - discount £15.99 (~ $23.30)
Hobbit - list £6.99 - discount £5.59 (~ $8.15)
Hurin - list £7.99 - discount £6.39 (~ $9.30)

With the TAXDAY code ( i spotted the code by chance here!) the singles are $10.83 at fictionwise, but the 100% rebate means I'm not unhappy with the price!

It you want to buy from FictionWise, I suggest waiting for the LIT version. It has the larger images, like the ePub version, see ScreenShots of The Hobbit.

I too am keeping my "Tha" - will tell folks the title is in Middle Earth, or maybe the runes didn't convert well digitally.

also, to the person who fixed the epub glitch, how did you find it?
I found I couldn't remove the DRM because of a corrupted file name (and therefore couldn't manage my sopny reader from my Mac via Calibre).

JSWolf tracked down the offending file which was missing "7.htm" on the end be decompressing the original ePub. You can do this with WinZIP on a PC

Apologies if this has already been answered...

I've never used Fictionwise before, but they have a 100% micropay rebate on these books. Does this mean I could buy The Fellowship of the Ring, and with the micropay rebate buy the Two Towers, and with the Micropay rebate buy the Return of the King? I'm guessing there will be something to prevent this, but it doesn't hurt to ask!
