Wow, that thing was annoying, it took me a day to solve this puzzle!
Just purchased all the ebooks I've wanted just to not be bothered again (NOT TOO SOON!)

Thanks alot for the help, guys. I'm very glad, finally !

Glad it worked.

It took me three hours to get BlueStacks running

I finally started using Kobo instead of Kindle for all new ebooks. If the books were published last year or before I purchase Kindle. After Kindle changed the way to download this spring, I do not trust Kindle not to change it again and make it impossible to download, etc. I am sure Amazon is working on doing its darnedest to insure we can not own our books! So in order to read my new book on my Kobo it looks as though I’ll have to buy an old Kindle. There have been so many models over the years I’m unsure of which ones will work for the workaround and which not - it doesn’t help that many eBay sellers have no idea which one they’re selling! I would appreciate any advice or info regarding which models to get and which to avoid. I really only want a cheap one as these days I only buy about 1 new book a year.

TIA.

Don't buy from eBay. Too many Kindles sold there have been blacklisted and that would make them useless to what you want.

In order to download your purchased Kindle eBooks via your web browser, you need to have a K3 or later Kindle. K3 is also knows as Kindle Keyboard. It's the oldest Kindle that supports KF8.

Here are a couple of searches on Woot--part of Amazon--the first is for tablets and ereaders in general the second is for kindles and fire tablets.

https://www.woot.com/category/computers/tablets?

https://computers.woot.com/plus/amaz...re-tablets-27?

Look for a Basic or Paperwhite that is 2016 or newer.

I would like to point out that method 4 described in the first post of this thread (convert from KFX format) is currently working for all books using the latest version of Kindle for PC (2.0) along with the latest DeDRM beta release (10.0.9) and the KFX Input plugin. Anyone wishing to do that should probably not delay as Amazon has been aggressive in updating KFX DRM whenever it was previously defeated.

Thanks for the info, unfortunately I’m in the UK so the links you kindly provided won’t work for me - I should of stated this in my post.

Thanks for the advice and info. I looked on other sites - I’m in the UK - but haven’t found anything old enough. I might have to risk eBay and hope I get a genuine seller. Is there any way of telling if they have been blacklisted?

I could ask the seller before purchasing, and then return the reader if they lie I suppose. There seem to be a lot of 4th generators available I assume these would work if they’re not blacklisted?

Thank you for the info. I have a Mac not PC though and the book I wish to buy isn’t out until 1 September so I couldn’t do anything sooner.

Does the old format still download to Linux I wonder. I’ve no idea about Linux but maybe the answer would be to set up a Linux VM?

I doubt a Linux VM will do you any good since neither K4PC or K4Mac will run under Linux. I don't know if the BlueStacks Android emulator for Mac will run the version of Android Kindle app mentioned in the DRM workaround: Kindle for Android thread or if the tools used with it to extract the backup file will work.

What jhowell said for K4PC 2.0 and DeDRM beta 10.0.9 also works with current K4Mac, which is 1.40.1.
