I'm sorry for you both, but I already had him. And I'm a cannibal, so we can't share him anymore. In truth, I still have a couple of spare ribs, but I plan to have a broth this weekend.... |

Ok, folks we'll start May 1. That's Labor Day for much of the world. This gives people who haven't seen the movie or read the book a chance to do so before we start. This is emabarrasing, but I've never participated in a book discussion group before, so practical pointers (from any source!) would be appreciated... |

) should start a new thread in the lounge, called something like "film club : films of the 30's and 40's : May 2009" or similar to explain the premise, and announce the first film and the date. i can make it a sticky so people will see it, the way we do for the book club. sound good to everybody ? actually i thought we were going to have a nomination thread and then a vote thread first, but we can do that for future months. but i'm fine with topper for a starting film since it's in the pd, and we have the book here, and it has cary grant.

I apologise for short-circuiting democracy, but the thread seemed to by dying and I wanted to give it a push... Each month, we'll poll for the next month's movie. Ok.

... and besides, it was your idea after all. it only seems fair you should choose the first film. |

It makes sense considering most of the best movies of the times were adapted from novels. The studios were just tapping that pool of talent to everyones advantage.

yes, and what a pool of talent it was ! raymond chandler, dashiell hammett, thorne smith (he wrote topper) to name just three... but the adaptations at the time seemed to be so well done compared to some of the recent adaptations i've seen. screenwriters were excellent too at the time, and directors and actors were amazing.
