It has come to my attention that there is a serious error in the omnibus ePub of The Lord of the Rings. The error is that one of the files is misnamed so you cannot read chapter 7 of The Fellowship of the Ring. The solutions is to unzip the epub and rename LordoftheRings_chap- to LordoftheRings_chap-7.html and then zip it all back up. Then it will be good to go. Also with this error, you cannot remove the DRM.

@JSWolf: You should be able to fix it by also editing the file's entry in the META-INF/encryption.xml file. (YMMV -- I haven't tried this yet.)

That's why I won't buy DRMed ebooks unless the DRM can be removed.

I have to disagree with your premise. You see, this makes the fifth time I've bought LOTR in the past 40 some years. Someone borrowed the first set and didn't return it. The second set got wet and torn. The Fellowship volume from the third set "disappeared." The fourth set is probably somewhere but I still want it on my reader enough to buy a fifth set.

All that needed to be done is decompress the epub, rename the file and compress to a new file. Worked like a charm.

There is no encryption.xml file. It was easier to just rename anyway. Als that means that the links/ToC works.

I have an issue that I just noticed for the first time with ADE for Windows. This book has appendixes and footnotes. So when there is a link in the book yopu can click and it will go to it fine. But how the heck do you get back? I know the 505 and 700 have history back and that should work. But how does it work in ADE for Windows?

For example, the default LIT stylesheet has no vertical space between paragraphs. Most LIT HTML thus just uses the default to get no vertical space. The HC EPUB editions appeared to have been converted using the CSS 2.1 recommended default values, and thus had a blank line separating all paragraphs.
The omnibus edition does not have spaces between each paragraph.

I still have my set from 1986. At least with printed books, if they're lost the fault is mine alone.

The way I see it is, if a ebook is DRMed and can't be removed I generally stuck reading it on a certain device. If a company decides to discontinue selling that device then I can be possibly stuck with a whole bunch of ebooks that can't be read. If my reader breaks or it no longer holds a charge and I can't find a replacement battery, etc.

However, if you lose or destroy one of your pbooks, that doesn't mean you loose your entire book collection. I think that's the point.

My opinion anyways.

See the attached screenshots, and compare to ScreenShots of The Hobbit. The 2nd screenshot shows the largest font (the underlining is a longstanding MOBI bug which usually does not show up in normal reading). The images are a bit small for the iLiad (3rd screenshot).

Hey thanks for all your work.

Yeah, that image looks unfortunate but still passable. I just might pick it up from fictionwise then...

Voting with my pocket book in other words, just a personal policy.

Sometimes that hurts. <sigh> But! There are so many wonderful books available either DRM Free or just plain free that I will have more books/ebooks than I can read in my lifetime.
You are not alone, NormHart! I have the same personal policy - I don't buy
DRMed ebooks.

I want to buy these from fictionwise but I gotta know, which version looks the best(mobi->epub or epub straight)
before I buy.
also, to the person who fixed the epub glitch, how did you find it? I'd like to be able to find and fix issues in converted to epubs that crash my reader.

From other posts, it seems that the ePUB version is best. It certainly appears to have the biggest and least compressed illustrations.

I checked with Fictionwise last night, and they've confirmed that they'll have the LIT version available later this week.
