I woke up at 4 am this morning because of loud music coming from you can guess which neighbour.

Now, is it a reaction to their written warning. Possibly, but the person living next to my bedroom (rooms upstairs are rented out, often to people who work for them) has done this before.

Plus, the council was still writing up the letter to the restaurant when they called yesterday. I don't know how the written warning is delivered. By email, regular mail, signed mail or hand delivered. Since it's an official warning I presume one of the two latter ones, that way they know it's been received and they have proof of it.

It wouldn't surprise me if the chef comes by and wants an explanation. To which the answer will be that after asking nicely for a year and a half and only getting either a rude or a dismissive answer it was time to call in the council. They've had their chance after us asking to keep the door clear. The council gave them a verbal warning to do so and they didn't listen, then an official written warning is the consequence.

I have the same problem with affect and efffect. Everybody seem to not understand the difference.

AFFECT is what an action does (or will do) to a person/object.

EFFECT is the result of an action on a person/object.

Example:

Dropping a rock on a person's head will affect them by raising a lump on their head.

The lump on my head was the effect of a rock being dropped on it.

yes, I'm a bit cranky about affect/effect as well, but...at least I can almost, ALMOST "get" why they get that wrong. They are damn near homonyms, at least.

But SQUASH is a bloody plant or smooshing something. QUASH is not. urghghghg.

I'm sure, in this group, we could rant about English-language abuse pet peeves all. day. long. ("Could care less," anyone? or "Begs the Question"? OY!!)

I've got one that keeps applying for other internal positions. And never gets it. I think we're on the 4th or 5th try. And I'm sure she has no idea why.

When you're just mediocre at the job you're doing, you're unlikely to get promoted. Although she's better than the one they let go on Friday. Talk about awkward when your desk is in full view of theirs when they come back with her to get her stuff...

You would not know she's mediocre unless your her supervisor. Sadly, jobs these days are not based on qualifications but how you answer ridiculous interview questions. i had an interview that asked me questions nothing to do with the job i was applying for.

This would make me insane; I don't do well with scenarios that are egregiously one-sided and unfair like this. I'd probably end up being fired, were I you, because I just wouldn't be able to let it go without proof.

I don't know what it was that I said. The company would not tell me and I had no memory of it. I find it shitty that some total stranger would try to get another person fired over a conversation. What is sad is they completely bypassed my management. It was straight from cooperate. So cooperate went over my supervisor and my manager and totally excluded them in the discussion. I guess that's a good thing. I would have been mortified if my supervisor knew. There is nothing on my permanent record( So I assume it was a warning discussion) so I am pretending it never happened and I changed how my name is viewed on facebook so strangers can't google me and find my linkedin page and thus my employer info.

I admit it--I find this all pretty boggling, like the "permanent record" stuff, too. (I don't even know what that means; in 50+ years of working, I don't think I've ever heard someone say that, outside of movies, before now.)

I am boggled that corporate would even indulge someone like this; that they expect you to roll over and take a verbal lashing, when they won't tell you what was said, or what you "did wrong" and...this is frankly nuts. I would never tell someone to quit their job, but maybe, in a day and age when every company out there is looking for good people, you should be looking, for your own sake.

It's like..."you did wrong because we SAY you did; we won't show you what it was, or who sent it, or what conversation it was, now stick your tail between your legs and behave yourself." Yeah, no. Personally, I'd have to move on but I think you've been very poorly treated. What's next, accusing you of stealing money, without telling you from where, how much or with any proof?

But I would think that most companies, outside of mom and pop type companies, have to keep records for various reasons: lawsuits, unemployment compensation (here in the U.S.), ...

OTOH, I've read articles saying that HR (Human Resources) keeps this sort of "naughty" list. I guess a company can do what they want, but honestly, the very sound of it--"PERMANENT RECORD"--has echoes of 1984 meets Soviet Russia.

What kind of records, of disciplinary proceedings, writeups and the like are NOT permanent? What, do they self-destruct, MI-style, in 30 seconds?

Just saying. I think they treated @HLS very badly and inappropriately. That's my $.02 and I'm not movin' off that dime.

I always though "permanent record" was a term used in grade school to scare students, where it just referred to whatever sort of file the school kept on students. Then it got exaggerated and carried over to post-school life, as an urban legend.

For weeks we haven't had many people trying to get in to our store or get me to sell them things. Occasionally someone wanted to tell us how much they would miss us and wish us the best, but that was it.

Until yesterday. It feels like I spent as much time dealing with people asking stupid questions ("are you really closing down" -> no we HAVE closed down "are you really closed" -> it says so on the sign right in front of your face). I had one that demanded to go through the boxes to find the lamp socket he needed (we were the only ones having that in stock). The socket was in those boxes, in a paper baggie amongst hundreds of other paper baggies. So I told him it wasn't in there and I didn't know where he could get that socket elsewhere.

My theory about why we're getting those people again after weeks of quiet is that next week is the last week of the summer vacation in our region. People are returning home from vacation and want to finish up some project before returning to work/school. The last two weeks of the summer vacation were always the start of the busy season for us.

I could close the door, but then I feel really locked in; the window has a tarp over it and I found I need some connection to the outside. Plus I suspect, going by the type of people yesterday, they would ring the doorbell. At least when the door is open with the rack in front of it I can stay back and not approach the door. When I have to open the door (it might be a delivery or a neighbour dropping off some empty boxes) I'm at the door and when I'm at the door people assume they will be helped. If I'm able to stay back in the building they tend to leave quicker.

Just three more weeks of this, but I'm expecting it to get busier again with people demanding to be helped.

Dang urban foxes. Lazy neighbours leaving their waste unsecured and the pesky critters scatter the waste all around the neighbourhood. I also do not appreciate their evening forays into operatics.
