Cover thumbnails too small

I use Calibre to manage my books and send them to my Kobo Sage via USB. Several of the books that I've sent to the Kobo show tiny cover thumbnails (or, perhaps, half the size of the thumbnails for most books). I've checked in Calibre and the covers for those books appear to be the same size and resolution as the covers that display correctly. I've tried deleting the covers and then downloading them again from the web before replacing the book on the Kobo but that hasn't helped. Any thoughts as to what else I might look for to try to track down the issue?

epub 2, epub 3 or kepub?
I’ve noticed on ADE 4.5 that epub3 covers render small, where epub2 are ok.
I realise that you are on Kobo but perhaps there is a similar reason?
No doubt people with more experience wil be along soon.

Are you resizing the cover images before embedding them in the epub? If you have KoboUtiliities installed, have you tried sending the cover images from there and then restarting your Kobo to overwrite the cached copy?

I think I've tried resizing and not resizing (but the size that Calibre shows seems to be around the same size as other images that display correctly). I haven't tried KoboUtilities, so I guess that's the next step.
