Coworkers are endless amusement.

I've got one that keeps applying for other internal positions. And never gets it. I think we're on the 4th or 5th try. And I'm sure she has no idea why.

When you're just mediocre at the job you're doing, you're unlikely to get promoted. Although she's better than the one they let go on Friday. Talk about awkward when your desk is in full view of theirs when they come back with her to get her stuff...

Give her a chance, Hitch. I'm sure we'll have something new to read here. And meanwhile, if it gets slow, we'll just get you to tell us about your latest client. Now THEY'RE amazing.

Ah, but there's the house hunting (which I'll talk about in the So What Are You Doing RIGHT NOW thread), and then there's my parent's move. With my luck my sister and I pick a house near The Neighbor From Hell and then there's my new job. I plan on finding a job in retail, so I'm expecting a supply of annoying customers.

Today's rant: bicycle manufacturer and bicycle store websites.

Some time early next year I want to buy a new bike. Mine is over 20 years old, it was a new bike, but not expensive. I've always had either new but cheaper bike or I had used bikes. I now want a new and good bike.

But looking for one has been hard. For various reasons I don't want an ebike. Almost all bicycle website have a section for the non-ebike bikes. However, when you to that section they do list ebikes. And it isn't always obvious when it's an ebike or not from the picture or name.

I realize they do this to try and sell more (expensive) ebikes, but it's annoying. I refuse to buy from any shop that has a website like this.

Why can't we buy cars direct from manufacturers rather than having to go through car dealerships?

In the States, Tesla is placing quite of few of their direct sales stores on reservation land to get around various laws written for the benefit of car dealers. I would never suggest that there might have been donations both over and under the table in gaining support for some of those laws.

Around here, it's being recommended that e-bikes and e-scooters not be stored inside your home or attached structure. Evidently too many fires are being linked to battery powered vehicles and even tools.

Fires connected to e-bike batteries spike in Toronto amid increased use

One item is that quite a few of these fires are related to aftermarket chargers, replacement batteries, etc. which were not certified by UL, CSA, TÜV SÜD, etc.

I've been seeing a lot of that on the BBC news, and also more on the Dutch news.

However, my main reason is that I don't know where I will find a job. I plan on finding it within cycling distance from where we live and there's a high chance that my job won't have a secure place to park bikes. Ebikes are highly wanted by bike thieves. So much so that they have taken to breaking into peoples (often not very well secured) sheds to steal both ebikes and expensive barbecues. If I can't park it anywhere secure, and maybe not even park it somewhere I can chain it to something with a chain lock I don't want to take that risk

Plus, I can use the exercise. I recently read that you burn twice as many calories on a regular bike than on an ebike.

And then there's there the journey I will be going on to see how neurodiverse I am. Over the past year I've been reading up on it and I'm certain I'm "on the spectrum". Just in what way and which type remains to be seen. Once we've settled in our new home I'll be starting that journey.

It would explain so much and it would be a big fat middle finger to all those teachers who labelled my as stupid, lazy and weird.

New "favorite" subtitle:

That knocks "Dog barking in distance" off its perch.

This morning the council called me. They told me that on Thursday evening they (civil servants) went to take a look at the situation and they saw that our door was blocked, both by tables and chairs and the olive trees. Last time they sent people from another department (dealing with parking, cycling in pedestrian area and other general anti-social behaviour).

Even though officially they can't officially give a warning to the restaurant of the olive trees, they did have a talk with them. They "hadn't realized", which is BS since we've asked them several time to move the trees.

The other restaurant got a verbal warning last time, now they are getting a written warning. And the council want them to put in a physical barrier. So a screen or a rope or something, to prevent their customers from moving in front of the door. And it has to be put up on their own part of the sidewalk, so it'll take up space where they can't put any tables and chairs.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. It's our problem for another two and a half weeks. I'm going to email the new owner the details and the case number, if he (or rather his builders) have any problems they can refer to that case number instead of starting from scratch.

You'd think that the city would keep track of these escalating or, at least, not-ceasing incidents, wouldn't you? (Even if it's just a chronological record?) I'd be damned irritated were I some city worker, sent out to deal with this, get told by the restaurant owner that they "didn't realize" and then upon getting back to the office, etc. finding out that, of course, they realize. They just don't give two s**ts.

I feel sorry for the new owner, having to deal with this, but they may be harsher and less likely to tolerate the BS.

It's the council, we know from experience that they're not very efficient.

No worries about the new owner. His whole business is buying up buildings (including old ones like ours), renovating them and then either selling them on or renting them out. He's a big player in our city. And he probably won't be selling this building, since he wants his daughter to start her own business (pastry shop I think) downstairs.

He's a very nice guy, but I think once you cross him you're in deep doo doo. I don't think he's even going to deal with it himself, he'll put his lawyers on it and he'll make sure the restaurants will behave or it will cost them. Especially if I let him know about the current problems.
