Loading mounted drive on macBook is slow

When I am using my macBook to open a library from a mounted drive, the loading time is long. It takes around 7 minutes for loading ~300GB library. (The library is in the Synology Nas.)

Could someone please explain and give some suggestions for the situation. Thank you.

By all means back up Calibre files to a NAS when Calibre isn't running. But you can't sensibly run anything using SQLight on a network drive. A USB, eSATA, SCSI or Firewire drive can be mounted externally with Calibre files, but not a network share of any kind.

Use a local drive.

Probably something to do with this ==>> I am getting errors with my calibre library on a networked drive/NAS?

Thanks, but my boss want me to use the NAS instead of portable drives.

Can I do anything to improve the performance of using calibre if the library is on the NAS?

Yes, and as strongly as one would recommend not to drive on the wrong side of the road or swim in crocodile infested waters.

Nothing I can think of, and even if you could you would eventually suffer catastrophic data loss.

Get your boss to read that FAQ item I posted.

Just get a PC that supports more than 1 internal drive. (most of mine have a second 1-2T drive.

Most (business class) Mid Tower PC do. I mentioned Business class because I bought a Dell at a local store and it did not even have 1 extra Drive power connection over what was fitted. ( I was adding an extra USB3 card that need extra power via the common drive power connection. Insane cost reduction)

Nothing wrong with Synology, (I back up to mine) just that Calibre does file operations that MUST happen together and not have something manipulating those files while running. (no active sync)

My laptop has a PCIe SSD and a SATA HDD. The user data is all on the HDD. It's very much faster than my HDD only laptop.
My Desktop "shoebox" has also a PCIe SSD and a SATA HDD, though 3.5" instead of 2.5". It can take 2x 2.5" in the same location using an optional mount.

You don't say what sort of Macbook, but unfortunately most can only expand using a portable drive. The NAS also has the issue that you need a network connection to access it. I do have a server but no application on the laptop or desktop of anyone relies on it except for backups or sharing for download. It does other stuff.

NAS's have their own operating system, usually a Linux variant, so there is always translation and indexing when storing or serving data, plus they decide on their own when to carry out internal housekeeping tasks. This can cause interruptions to data transfer, emphasising the general leisurely performance. Better for longer-term storage and making files available to other users on the network. Re the MacBook - portable USB SSD drives aren't prohibitively expensive nowadays and if you haven't a spare port, neither are little hubs.
