I've considered to buy ePub version, but since Stanza doesn't support DRMed ePub (Supported formats), I've decided to go for eReader on Fictionwise. This is first book, that Stanza refused to open, but then again, there's not many books out there comparable to LotR size-wise.

The Sony ebook store sells the LRX version native to the PRS-505 but can't be "liberated" from DRM.

un-DRM'd epub would be the next best version since epub compatibility exists for the PRS-505.

Personally, I would go for un-DRM'd epub for future portability but if you're uncomfortable with working with DRM, just go and get it directly from the Sony ebook store for the easiest experience and correct formatting.

Hoping, I was unsure what Harper Collins DRM/TTS policy was. Now I know

Yes, they have a fair selection besides which they emailed me about the Ring books. They are also upfront and honest about the DMR/TTS ebook status versus Amazon.

So, yes, I went over to the dark side.
I was tempted too but the Force was with me. (Besides I don't currently have a sufficient balance in MicroPay and, of course, the DRM from Fictionwise is not compatible with my Kindle.)

Text to speech works for me on the Kindle version of The Hobbit. Haven't tried it on LotR, but I can't imagine it would be different.

I do have the ePub version from HarperCollins.

It is nicely made with the best TOC I have seen so far on my Sony Reader.

The "small" font size is a little bit on the smal side, but still readable.

The inline runes do not scale with the rest of the text, but this lies in there nature of being inline images, I guess.

I have the whole trilogy and I am surprised and happy how fast the pages turn. Even jumps across the book do not take longer than page turns.

I would say a well made eBook. Please more of those.

And I also ditched a certain other copy of the text I had lying around...

I did that first thing after purchasing my LOTR ebooks.

Thanks for your review. Are you able to comment on the quality of the images at all?

The map (the only one as far as I can see) is not really readable. Here a higher resolution and zooming would be great, but that is just not available in ePub yet.

I checked the image of the door to Moria on page 349 and it looks very sharp and detailed on the Reader taking up 90% of the height of the screen.

The image is just to get a feel for the size.

Thanks for your efforts in posting that pic. IMO, not bad at all.

Nice... Some may argue [read my kids] that the pronunciation and ad hoc voices aren't all that good any way.

Could someone who bought the EPUB edition to read on their Sony Reader comment on the formatting? I'd just purchased the EPUB editions of four of HC books and all of them looked like conversions from the HTML used for the LIT editions, but not accounting for LIT-specific quirks.

For example, the default LIT stylesheet has no vertical space between paragraphs. Most LIT HTML thus just uses the default to get no vertical space. The HC EPUB editions appeared to have been converted using the CSS 2.1 recommended default values, and thus had a blank line separating all paragraghs.

I was thinking much the same thing, while sifting through the (currently) 133 posts on this thread.

I'm hoping publishers can see that - even when there are long-known copies available via Darknet - people are willing to pay reasonable prices for legal copies.

Amen to that. Now if only I could get J.K. Rowling to take my money.

As long as such legal copies can be easily un-DRM-ed
