The physical book cannot be read using a reader.

But the physical book won't read itself aloud, either .

Well I've enjoyed the "read aloud" feature on my pBooks since I can remember, as so do my kids

Not solely, I avoid buying any DRM infected or TTS disabled ebooks. For those books that I must have I will buy the dead tree version before I will purchase the ebook version and will try to purchase the dead tree version from another publisher if at all possible. Frequently I will purchase a used version to avoid giving publishers and distributors of DRM infected and TTS disabled ebooks any of my money.

Voting with my pocket book in other words, just a personal policy.

Sometimes that hurts. <sigh> But! There are so many wonderful books available either DRM Free or just plain free that I will have more books/ebooks than I can read in my lifetime.

I hate the DRMs too, but I take advantage of Fictionwise offer: 100% rebate, from the pocket of the publisher and the retailer, and I'll be able to buy new books with the same money:

http://www.fictionwise.com/lotr.htm

So, yes, I went over to the dark side.

Stanza on iPhone couldn't open LotR book (the biggest 3-in-1 edition). It hangs on decrypting :-(

According to the Lexcycle website, Stanza does not support ePub DRM.

I get what you're saying about not wanting to buy books with DRM but I guess I'm confused as to why you posted the stats on the LOTR books from Fictionwise. Were you expecting them to be DRM free? Have you had better luck finding books you want without DRM on Fictionwise?

Oh sure, the pronunciation software may be great but the daily hardware maintainance on it...really. 3 to 4 recharges a day? Outrageous! Plus it only reads one book at a time. It will never catch on.

Once the LotR book has been un-DRMed, it works fine. That's been my experience.

My workflow: DRM'd mobipocket --> unDRM'd mobipocket --> Calibre to epub --> Stanza on iPod touch.

If you purchased the epub version, replace "mobipocket" above with epub.

I have no problems with reading the trilogy on my iPod Touch using Stanza.

P.S. Just in case someone asks why I purchased mobipocket, it's so I can also read on my Blackberry using the Mobipocket reading software. What I do question, is whether the images would have been better in the epub/lit versions, if I had purchased those, and then converted to mobipocket. No big deal either way...

As far as I can remember, Stanza has always supported eReader DRM'd files.
