Under the [ApplicationPreferences] header in the Kobo eReader.conf file, add SideloadedMode=true.
This information was copied from a message posted in January, 2022 by @davidfor (Sideloaded Mode). It was the first hit when I did a Google search on sideloadedmode=true site:mobileread.com. |

Dnsb,
I hope adding that line to the CONF file will work. I'm not very confident after my editing of the sideloadedmode=true did not make any difference |

You should see the change as soon as you eject. If not, then you put the line in the wrong place or some other issue editing.
I'm not sure if case sensitive SideloadedMode=true Also use a text editor that respects UNIX style line endings (all text editors on Linux and Notepad++ on Windows), not a wordprocessor. I copy the file, rename copy, edit copy, SaveAs with original name and copy/overwrite file on Kobo. The setting survives a firmware update, but probably not a factory reset. I've done this on Aura HD H2O, Nia, Libra, Libra2, Sage and Elipsa for myself and others. |

It is also probably neccessary to restart the reader. I always use this setting, it has the added advantage, that if you loose your device it wiil not be possible for someone else to buy books from Kobo using the device. Edit: At least not using your account. If you want to revert you can always use SideloadedMode=false. Then you can sign in again. |

Case matters. SideloadedMode is what you need. (capital S, capital M) It also must be under the [AppplicationPreferences] header.

Dear all,
When sideloadedmode was first metnioned here (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...4&postcount=18 by quoth), i signed out and then back into my kobo account (I googled, and this is what i thought sideloadedmode meant) As an aside, it has lost all track of my reading locations and which books are recently read and which books aren't. In other words, all the books on my Kobo are now marked as unread. This isn't a big deal for me. I just hope it didn't lose my highlights and annotations. As pertaining to our subject matter, it looks like signing out and signing back in removed the quick widget tour from my home screen. So now I don't know whether or not I need side loaded mode. |

I'm sorry I didn't make it clear that SideloadedMode=true was a setting in the configuration file. Signing out is a bit like deregistering a Kindle.
Signing in only affects SideloadedMode if it is in the settings, in which case it's set to false. If you are signed in, enabling sideloaded mode preserves all settings and only makes it seem as if you not signed in as well as changeing the User Interface. I'd not imagined anyone would think I was suggesting actually signing out. Using Calibre to separately backup database (can be done just by copying) and also using added columns for reading status & position is a good idea. I always use Calibre to read the Annotations etc for a book when I finish it and copy/paste to text file, though it's possible to store per book annotations in Calibre I don't. Never signin or signout without a backup. Last edited by Quoth; 07-15-2023 at 04:06 PM. |

I'm writing this post in the context of having signed out (and back into) my kobo account on my kobo forma. doing so, interestingly, made the quick tour widget disappear, but at the cost of losing all the applied kobopatch stuff.
i connected kobo forma to laptop. i viewed .kobo/kobo/eReader.conf file. it says quickwidgettourshown=true. i changed it to false, then saved. i noticed there was an ereader.conf~ file. that ~file showed true, i believe. I then unmounted the kobo. interestingly, unlike last time, this kobo said "importing new content", and there was a progress bar. I waited till its done, and now I see the "Get a Quick Tour" widget again on my home screen, whereas it was never there since I signed out (and back into) my Kobo account two or 3 days ago! So I reconnected the kobo to laptop. aagh, i can't remember if i had to edit the conf file again. i think i didn't have to. anyway, whether it was still false or I had to again make it false, after i disconnected again, the quick widget tour was still there. I did all this without using any kobopatch. this is ironic -- when i don't use kobopatch or edit the conf file, the quicktour widge disappears, but when i edited the conf file, it reappears. aaagh! |

Did you re-edit the file to change the QuickTourWidgetShown=false back to QuickTourWidgetShown=true? True says that you have seen the Quick Tour widget and tapped through it, false says that you have not.
And once again, pretty much everything in the .conf file is CaSe SeNsItIvE. |

Some bad news: Changing QuickTourWidgetShown from false to true did nothing.
Some good news: Adding "SideloadedMode=true" worked! "Home" tab is gone. "My Books" is the new "home". |
