During the last Tolkien sale, I bought a "deluxe" version of The Hobbit. I wanted it for Tolkien's art.

Ugh! Reading this thread today I checked and I've just realized that last week I bought a book from Open Road Media in Amazon because it wasn't available in any other ePub store, and today that book is available in Kobo.
I even checked the Open Road website in case they sold directly. I could have waited if I had known, the book is sitting in my TBR mountain, I bought it just so I don't forget about it.

My guess is Amazon paid Open Road Media to remove books from other sites for Prime Day.

They will be in trouble with FTC in USA if that's ever proved and other regulators elsewhere.

Maybe true, maybe coincidence?

The court(s) might have to decide for the FTC if paying supplier(s) to have a monopoly for just one day counts. Some countries the regulator can just decide and then it's up to the company to go to court to appeal against it.

It seems like too much of a coincidence for Open Road to pull most eBooks on sale from shops other then Amazon during Prime Day.

I would like to know why this happened.

Could be a coincidence, Jon, but if you find any evidence both FTC and European regulators might use it:

The watchdog, known as CNMC, found that in October 2018 the two US tech giants had agreed to limit the sale of Apple products on Amazon's Spanish websites by third-party resellers, a move which "drastically" reduced competition.
