Another annoying Kindle eBook trait is a 7% text indent. That's way too large.

That is true for KF8 (azw3) format. However most books are delivered from Amazon in KFX format and that will show embedded fonts that are used sporadically within the text even if publisher font is not selected.

The user only needs to use the "Publisher" option if the eBook explicitly tries to set the "normal paragraph text font". I put that into quotes because Kindle makes a guess based on the structure of the eBook about what are "normal paragraphs".

OR if you follow their requirements and don't set a body font at all. other than that, yeah, sure, they work perfectly (not).

I'll have to give KFX a try with embedded fonts. I was looking at one Kindle eBook that has some foreign text in it I don't know if it would work without the embedded font.

I never get my books in KFX from Amazon unless testing KFX (rare now). I use webpage and Download for USB transfer.

I do too. But, I'll use calibre to convert from KF8 to KFX and try it.

Perhaps someone can help me to set fonts to export to my Kobo. Some books have weird default fonts which necessitate much fiddling with reading settings before it’s comfortable to read.

When I import a book into Calibre, part of my process is to run a conversion, even if’s already epub. I’d like to be able to set default font size and line spacing (even if the font family remains unchanged). Can someone point me at the relevant settings to use in the converter please?

Not the same as a KFX from Amazon.
Also Calibre isn't converting to KFX. The 3rd party KFX output PI is simply calling an Amazon program on your PC.

I have this as default under Convert -> Look & feel ->Styling

Other CSS Properties: [ line-height, white-space ]

The renderer will automatically do line spacing according to font metrics and your Line Spacing slider if there is no line-height declarations at all. Thus spacing set by slider, but relative font size makes the spacing appropriate too.

Another Kindle pet peeve. % in places that em should be used. These percentages should be removed for appropriate em.
