I wouldn't be surprised if Amazon switched it already, but I'm more inclined to think user error until there's other reports.

Did you also use the file conversion plug in to epub?

I haven't actually tested it, as I don't buy books from Amazon anymore.

Yesterday noDRM briefly enabled the autogeneration of a pre-release version each time a new commit was made. When they discovered this was also sending out email notifications each time (GitHub doesn't have an option to only get notified of full/stable releases), they disabled it. And the pre-release is no longer there.

Presumably that's what didn't work for JSWolf. But the master code at noDRM's repo (which now includes Satsuoni's additions) was still working for me on new kfx drm when I checked.

You have not provided any details and you have not raised an issue at NoDRM's GitHub describing whatever problem you encountered.

Is there a way to extract the key needed from Kindle for Android from the app on Android 9.0 (Pie) without using the adb backup command? I cannot get it to work with my Bluestacks VM.

It only works for Nougat for me, but not Pie or Android 11. I need Pie or higher to get the latest version of Kindle for Android to get high-quality images in KFX files but I am stuck at the point of generating the backup with adb.

adb backup com.amazon.kindle gives a good response in the terminal but no backup window pops up in the VM. Nougat doesn't support the latest Kindle for Android and I can't go higher than Android 11 with BlueStacks.

So I appear to be stuck unless there is a way to obtain the key in the application files themselves. I have enabled root access in BlueStacks so I can at least access the system files including the app install directory. I just don't know exactly what I'm looking for.

I am doing the backup of the app with the 4.16 version which works when I do it in Nougat. But I need to do it on Android 9 Pie but the backup never works. ADB says it works but nothing ever shows up on screen on the BlueStacks VM. So it must be a problem with Android 9 and higher OS.

I have found that once you get a backup from 4.16 but upgrade to a higher version of Kindle for Android, the key still works to decrypt KFX. So I want to upgrade to the latest Kindle for Android to get high-quality image downloads. Kindle for Android 8.51 that's in the original post still only gives me low quality PRC files for the comics I am downloading. I get KFX files if I use the latest version. I just can't decrypt them without a backup from 4.16 from the same VM install.

I confess I didn't read this long thread…

I currently use the behemoth that is Calibre simply to remove DRMs from EPUBs from the library.

Is there a lighter (open-source) alternative, either GUI or CLI, using eg. DeDRM?

If you go back quite a few versions (I believe DeDrm), there were a versions that had simple GUI. If you're only using them for EPubs, I'm guessing they will work.
