“The Midnight Library” is a wonderful heart-warming book—an assertion of the value and beauty of life.
The opening of the story is very dark. Nora Seed is caught in a depression deepened by a series of negative experience that chop away at her self-worth. And she decides to die. She overdoses at 00:00:00 and finds herself in The Midnight Library. There she meets Mrs Elm, apparently a kindly school librarian from Nora’s childhood. From there we follow the fascinating journey of Nora as she attempts to find in the Library answers to her problems with choice, identity and personal worth and responsibility. The journey is bound up with Nora’s relationships with friends and family and her assumptions and aspirations which flow from these companions in her life. Nora is a beautifully characterised central character and her development is deeply satisfying. I enjoyed this book immensely. There is also an excellent audio version narrated by Carey Mulligan that provides a fine immersive experience. |

I'm reading Ann Leckie's newest Translation State on my Kobo.
I'm now settling in for a long listen of The Guns of August anniversary edition read by the delightful Wanda McCaddon. |

A Time Traveller's Best Friend and Memento Mori by W.R. Gingell. A light-hearted science-fiction story involving time-travel where the chronology of the chapters is not always obvious, even to the protagonists. One of the main characters is obviously a practice-run for the main character (Pet) in the City Between fantasy series (and definitely got better with practice). Entertaining: 3/5.
Coffin, Scarcely Used by Colin Watson. A late 1950s murder mystery. The dialogue was at times amusing but for me never quite made it to funny. The characters started to sound too much alike and the plot is mostly given away in the title. 2/5. With the Falling of the Dusk by Stan Grant, subtitled "A chronicle of the world in crisis". There is a reason I so rarely read political books: they can be incredibly frustrating. I keep wanting to shout "justify that", but the author so rarely hears me. Frustrations aside, I find Stan Grant an interesting person and his insights into many political situations are thought provoking, even when I don't agree with his conclusions. 3/5. |

Just finished Sea of Tranquility by Emily St. John and started Eversion by Alastair Reynolds. I give SoT 4 stars and so far I am enjoying Eversion.

I just finished The Haunted by Bentley Little. I liked the story itself, but it was a very slow read for me.

I am about half way through The Bear and the Serpent by Adrian Tchaikovsky. It’s the second book of the “Echoes of the Fall” trilogy. Book1 The Tiger and the Wolf’ was a brilliant introduction to a world of Shapeshifters technologically living in an early Iron Age civilization. Book 2 continues the stories of the remarkable characters we meet in the previous volume. The plotting is quite clever and the various story arcs are well integrated.

I just finished the first of the Rockton books from Kelly Armstrong City of the Lost, read on a recommendation from @Xanthe. Not bad, a solid 3+ stars and definitely worth reading the next in the series.

Next up: Flight of the Nighthawks by Raymond E. Feist. I've been doing a complete read of the Riftwar books, so it's take a while to get to this one - I bought it back on 24 October 2008! |
