Theme being ignored until manually reset

When editing AZW3 files using Calibre, then saving and sending to the Kindle Paperwhite (11th with FW5.15.1.1), sometimes the file displays with the default theme shipped with the device. I can correct it by changing to a different theme and then back to my preferred saved theme, or by changing some element in the theme (preferred font, spacing, etc.) to a different value then back again.

My workflow is:
  1. Edit file and save changes
  2. Close editor
  3. Connect device via USB
  4. Send file to device
  5. Eject device
  6. View book on Kindle
  7. Remove book from Kindle using Kindle UI
  8. Goto 1
After a couple of cycles of this, I hit the described bug.

What I am doing is checking that my style changes work correctly, and only the actual reader on the Kindle seems to be 100% accurate with what I will see.

I'm sure this is not a Calibre error, but I would like to know if other users have seen similar loss of their preferred theme. Until I found the workaround, I thought I was completely messing up the CSS, but couldn't figure out what it could be.

Next time you connect via USB, check to see if there's an orphaned .sdr folder for the deleted book. If it's there, delete it and see if you can still reproduce.

If that's the issue, you could consider using calibre to remove the book as well as to send it. It should clean up .sdr files for you.

This happens to me occasionally, sometimes even with books that I've purchased from Amazon and downloaded directly from them. I don't think it's a problem with Calibre, or the way you have formatted the book, I think it's just a bug with the Kindle.

I recently tried to convert an AZW3 file to ePub, and Send To Kindle wouldn't take it. I had to fix errors in the AZW3 that ebook-edit identified, and then it all went smoothly. I assume the publisher made the original error and somehow conversion to KFX (the usual format downloaded to Kindle) patched over the issue.

I almost never side load AZW3 to Kindle (I would covert to KFX for side loading) so I have no experience to offer on that.
