What device for koreader?

Hi all,

I have been quite happily using koreader on a Kindle Paperwhite 5 (11th generation) for maybe about a year. The only thing is, two of my Paperwhites have broken in the last year. For the first, the screen stopped working and amazon replaced the device. For the second, the device is stuck in a bootloop.. amazon have again replaced it, but the replacement comes with a newer firmware and so I cant run koreader on it.

I dont trust this particular Kindle model, perhaps I'm unlucky, but I always keep them in a case and am careful with them. So I'm looking for a different device to run koreader on.

I'm not averse to using a different kindle model (eg. a Kindle Oasis).. but I guess I'd have to find one on eBay with older firmware. I was mostly considering a kobo but heard that the libra 2 and other more recent Kobo devices have hardware-related instability issues.

What devices are you using and what do you recommend?

Many thanks!

Check out this thread for some suggestions - https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=347826
The Libra 2 really would be perfect for it IMO if it wasn't for the freezes. They actually happen pretty rarely if you disable notifications, and when they do it only takes about a minute to get back to reading. It's the nagging feeling of "oh, it just froze" the second an input doesn't immediately register that's annoying more than the actual freezes, lol

Yeah the Libra 2 does seem the perfect device except for that issue. How often does it crash for you? I often read in foreign languages where I need to use the dictionary a lot, I could imagine this causing it to crash more often. Thanks a lot!

IMHO, once you get a Libra 2, you may find you don't need KOReader.

My partner has been reading for about two weeks without a crash now. You can get unlucky and have it happen multiple days in a row. I imagine it's worse if you're using the dictionary a lot.

I've mostly switched over to my Boox now. It's quite the downgrade in terms of speed, quality of the frontlight and battery life, but I find the peace from not being afraid of crashing it worthwhile. (I also like the extra features of android, and it looks very pretty). But to a lot of people it basically becomes a non issue after you disable notifications (which are not crucial to using KOReader anyway).

I am a huge KOReader fan though. When using my Kobo I still prefer using KOReader over the native reader. Especially for PDFs.

Is there anything in particular that seals the deal for you with EPUBs, or is it just too much trouble to use Nickel for EPUB and KOReader for PDF?

The level of customization on KOReader is just great. I especially like being able to make my own gestures. I also love the stats it tracks and would like all of my reading to be tracked using their system, which I can then sync across devices. I prefer to keep my reading experience consistent across formats and always have my custom gestures so I stick with KOReader. It would definitely be a hassle to switch back and forth as I like to reference other books and documents while reading something else, which is super fast within KOReader but launching and exiting it takes a while on the Kobo.

I recently was reading a book that had just awful font size variation within the same chapters. So some passages were tiny and some were huge. Rather than constantly switching font sizes or editing the css you can just tick an option in KOReader to set all text to the same size. Things like that make me love KOReader.

I agree with all this. And it is even more customizable if you write patches. I can track easily how much I read every day/week/month

Yeah, Koreader is just much more flexible so if you can be bothered to learn the somewhat unintuitive interface, its just better than everything else.

I suppose I wouldn't mind using an android eink device I suppose, but I can imagine them not being very snappy and having poor battery life.

Random crashes kind of throws the kobo libra 2 out for me sadly. Are there any similar devices which work without issues?

Thanks!!

Have you tried a Libra 2? It's not sluggish.

I have 2 Kobo Libra devices. They are very fast yes. I mean the Kobo software. I find changing font size slow. With KOReader I have gestures to do it quicker. I find it more responsive.
