Strange Company by Nick Cole. It is definitely "Black Company" in space. Even down to having 2 cranky old "magicians" who work together but hate each other.

Yesterday I finished The Seance in Apartment 10 by Ambrose Ibsen. It's about a student who moves into an off campus apartment for summer so she can do summer courses. But the apartment is nearly empty and the atmosphere isn't good. When she and some friends do a seance with an ouija board things really start to ramp up.
I do like Ibsen's stories, but many feel like they're not fully fleshed out. The same with this one. He could have delved deeper into certain characters and other aspects and it could have been an even better book than it was. |

I’m reading A Rip Through Time by Kelley Armstrong. Modern detective time travels to 1869. Quite good so far!

An unexpected spur-of-the-moment read:
Finished the novella by Jack Williamson: With Folded Hands, in the July, 1947 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. Now back to my regularly scheduled read... Last edited by Dr. Drib; 06-06-2023 at 08:53 AM. |

Finishing up To Track a Traitor, the latest Lane Winslow book from Iona Whishaw. OK, but I think this series is starting to fade a bit.
Next up, A Chateau Under Siege, the new Dordogne/Bruno, Chief of Police book from Martin Walker that released in the UK today, but won't be in North America for another 2 months. Really, I should be more patient... |

Also a fun quick read. The rest are waiting for a bargain price.
![]() Next up: Fool's Assassin by Robin Hobb. The middle one of the trilogy finally went on offer at a price I was willing to pay, so I can start on the first one. |

I finished The Postscript Murders by Elly Griffiths, it's the second book in the Harbinder Kaur series. It could have been a cozy; an 80 year old, a former monk turner barista and an Ukrainian care worker team up together to find out who murdered their friend/mutual acquaintance and try to help Harbinder Kaur with her investigation. However, the book is a little bit darker than the first in the series. That doesn't mean there isn't some humour.
It's a totally different series than Griffiths' Ruth Galloway series, but I'm liking it. Up next: The Haunted by Bentley Little. |

I finished listening to Cixin Liu's Three Body Problem. I generally enjoyed it--I even laughed out loud in several places (which rates high marks). The narration was excellent. It's very clever and fun, but ultimately there were no memorable characters. I've said before that I don't need to like, or identify with, characters to enjoy a book, but I do need them to be distinguishable and have autonomy. For me, Three Body Problem's plethora of characters existed solely to convey the wit and clever ideas the author wished to discuss. They never developed further than that. They were not integral to the story.
Still... I will probably follow up on the other books in this series at some point, but I feel no compulsion to immediately dive back into it. Last edited by DiapDealer; 06-09-2023 at 06:48 AM. |
