I tried that when I first set up the "new" Mini (since it was already "out of date" from the first time they EOL'd Minis). The update kept timing out. So I downloaded the firmware, said I was going to use the Kobo Desktop, which gave me access to the Mini on my Linux computer. Than I just had to move over the firmware (like doing a regular manual update). I'm more worried about the security certificate than anything else. If they base that on the device model (and not the firmware) then I guess there's not much I can do about it.

I would think that "end of support" would mean that the Mini won't get any further firmware updates, but as long as Kobo doesn't make any breaking changes (e.g. updating the store to force a future TLS 1.4), you should still be able to sync it for the time being. If all else fails, you can use sideload mode from FW 4.35 and then copy all your books manually.

That's what I'm hoping. I think the last official Mini update was 3.19. I know I can sideload (and usually do), but I would still like the the Mini to be "fully functional." Not a huge deal, just hoping.

OK, it's May 26 and yesterday was the witching hour. I'd already updated the firmware on my Mini to 4.35.20400, so today I put it through its paces. It still fully syncs (unlike my Aura One and H2O, I might add, which start an endless process) and it downloads already purchased books. Didn't try buying anything, but I never purchase from my devices anyway. So short of a factory reset, I think everything's copacetic.

Same here. The only thing I worry about now is that they haven't actually "flipped the switch" yet. But I'm guessing (hoping) that the newest firmware will allow the Mini to keep syncing, like it did at its last cut off date.

One of the great delights of reading all of the above posts is that I haven't got the vaguest idea of what you people are talking about. At times a small glimmer of knowledge shines through but on reading the follow up posts it abruptly vanishes.
Oh well, I suppose I shall happily keep reading on my two Kobo devices with the forlorn hope that the world does not end before I have finished reading my latest book.

If you ever need to do a full factory reset for some reason, the setup process won't work unless you either a) update or b) connect to a PC over USB to use the Kobo desktop software. That's the only practical implication.

Ok, that doesn't sound too bad. If I did want to update, would there be any way to do it without a kobo account?

Yes, the firmware can be found at the link below (maintained by Geek1011) and you can do a manual update. Be sure to get the right firmware for you Kobo model.

I never got that email and I have two Kobo Forma’s. One is currently lost anyway as hubby doesn’t know where he put it. So neither of mine did the update.

I just successfully updated my Kobo Glo HD today (May 31) to Firmware version 4.35.20400.

I wasn't too worried if nothing happened because this is not a unit I use at all. Either the video controller is going or the screen is going. The screen displays uneven, lighter areas where the blacks are not as black as other areas of the screen.
