i've been an e-book user for some time (5/6 years).

Started off with a laptop but had to buy myself a pda.

Have taken an interest in handheld devices again when i first read about eink and the illiad (although i'm too poor at the moment to get one

).

So have been lurking on MobileRead for sometime.

Like the details of the Sony, but i'm a techie and still having a few issues with things like root kits, proprietary formats and unnecessary DRM's !!)

Welcome on board. Like you we all hope that there is never going to be an issue with "rootkits" again.

Welcome to MobileRead, FowlOleRon! Hopefully you're finding good info here, such as that the proprietary formats and DRM on the Sony are completely optional -- you just have to choose not to buy content from them.

The root-kit thing was seriously bad bull, but they seem to be sincerely trying to turn over a new leaf. Nobody's found any root-kits in the Connect Software so far, anyway (and with this crowd, you know that somebody must have looked by now).
