Today's Big Deal at Kindle UK is fifteen crime, thriller and mystery books for £0.99 each. The best of the lot (to me) is Deborah Crombie's newest (2023) Duncan Kincaid/Gemma James book, A Killing of Innocents. Many of the others are from smaller presses - which may, of course, still have good books . But YMMV, so here's the link to the sale webpage to look for yourself: https://www.amazon.co.uk/s?rh=n%3A4725112031&fs=true

Note that the Crombie book is published in Feb 2023, and is not on sale, at least as of now, at Kobo UK...

The books in SW Perry's Jackdaw series go on sale a lot, so I usually don't post anymore. But it is unusual to see all six, including the newest one, on sale at the same time, in the UK, for £0.99 each. Titles include: The Angel’s Mark, The Serpent’s Mark, The Saracen’s Mark, The Heretic’s Mark, The Rebel’s Mark, and The Sinner’s Mark. Note that The Sinner's Mark is unfortunately pubbed in April 2023, but luckily all six are on sale at Kobo UK as well...and discountable too!

Here are links:

Kobo UK series page for books 1 - 5: https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/series/the-jackdaw-mysteries
Kobo UK page for The Sinner's Mark, which isn't linked to the series page (at least as of now): https://www.kobo.com/gb/en/ebook/the-sinner-s-mark-3

Pompeii by Robert Harris is $3 in the US (Kobo, Amazon)
Quote:
All along the Mediterranean coast, the Roman empire’s richest citizens are relaxing in their luxurious villas, enjoying the last days of summer. The world’s largest navy lies peacefully at anchor in Misenum. The tourists are spending their money in the seaside resorts of Baiae, Herculaneum, and Pompeii.

But the carefree lifestyle and gorgeous weather belie an impending cataclysm, and only one man is worried. The young engineer Marcus Attilius Primus has just taken charge of the Aqua Augusta, the enormous aqueduct that brings fresh water to a quarter of a million people in nine towns around the Bay of Naples. His predecessor has disappeared. Springs are failing for the first time in generations. And now there is a crisis on the Augusta’ s sixty-mile main line—somewhere to the north of Pompeii, on the slopes of Mount Vesuvius.

Attilius—decent, practical, and incorruptible—promises Pliny, the famous scholar who commands the navy, that he can repair the aqueduct before the reservoir runs dry. His plan is to travel to Pompeii and put together an expedition, then head out to the place where he believes the fault lies. But Pompeii proves to be a corrupt and violent town, and Attilius soon discovers that there are powerful forces at work—both natural and man-made—threatening to destroy him.

Catacombs is the twelfth book in the Faye Longchamp series by Mary Anna Evans. It's £2.19 right now at Kindle UK. Books in this series are usually pretty pricy, so not sure why this one has been relatively reasonably priced for many months. But I'm not complaining...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07T94FS5F

Spoiler:
Quote:
A deafening explosion rocks a historic Oklahoma City hotel, sending archaeologist Faye Longchamp-Mantooth crashing to the marble floor of the lobby. She's unhurt but shaken—after all, any time something blows up in Oklahoma City, the first word on everyone's lips is the same: bomb.

Faye is in town for a conference celebrating indigenous arts, but is soon distracted by the aftermath of the explosion, which cracks open the old hotel's floor to reveal subterranean chambers that had housed Chinese immigrants a century before. Faye is fascinated by the tunnels, which are a time capsule back to the early 20th century—but when the bodies of three children are discovered deep beneath the city, her sense of discovery turns to one of dread…

Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King is $2.99 at Amazon and Kobo US.

Quote:
In a high-suspense race against time, three of the most unlikely heroes Stephen King has ever created try to stop a lone killer from blowing up thousands. “Mr. Mercedes is a rich, resonant, exceptionally readable accomplishment by a man who can write in whatever genre he chooses” (The Washington Post).**

The stolen Mercedes emerges from the pre-dawn fog and plows through a crowd of men and women on line for a job fair in a distressed American city. Then the lone driver backs up, charges again, and speeds off, leaving eight dead and more wounded. The case goes unsolved and ex-cop Bill Hodges is out of hope when he gets a letter from a man who loved the feel of death under the Mercedes’s wheels…

Brady Hartsfield wants that rush again, but this time he’s going big, with an attack that would take down thousands—unless Hodges and two new unusual allies he picks up along the way can throw a wrench in Hartsfield’s diabolical plans. Stephen King takes off on a “nerve-shredding, pulse-pounding race against time” (Fort Worth Star-Telegram) with this acclaimed #1 bestselling thriller.

Based on its blurb, I'm not totally sure about The Lost Apothecary, by Sarah Penner, as a mystery, but it's also listed in SYKM, and that's good enough for me. And it's on sale right now at Kindle UK for £0.99, and it sounds pretty good, and its webpage claims it was a New York Times Top Ten Bestseller. So even if it's "only" a historical novel with some mysterious elements, I'm going to give it a try...

Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08L7G19RP

Quote:
With crackling suspense, unforgettable characters and searing insight, The Lost Apothecary is a subversive and intoxicating debut novel of secrets, vengeance and the remarkable ways women can save each other despite the barrier of time.

Hidden in the depths of eighteenth-century London, a secret apothecary shop caters to an unusual kind of clientele. Women across the city whisper of a mysterious figure named Nella who sells well-disguised poisons to use against the oppressive men in their lives. But the apothecary’s fate is jeopardized when her newest patron, a precocious twelve-year-old, makes a fatal mistake, sparking a string of consequences that echo through the centuries.

Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive.

An omnibus of the first three titles in Rory Clements' John Shakespeare series (yes, the brother of that other Shakespeare ) is on sale in the US ($2.99) and UK (£2.99) right now. The titles included are: Martyr, Revenger, and Prince.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P1JY3XN
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/mar...enger-prince-1
Kindle UK: https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08DT8R1WX

Spoiler:
Quote:
The first three books of the bestselling John Shakespeare series of Tudor spy thrillers from Rory Clements, author of the Sunday Times bestseller Hitler's Secret ***

Martyr

Tensions in Elizabeth I's government are at breaking point. At the eye of the storm is John Shakespeare, chief intelligencer in the secret service of Sir Francis Walsingham. When an intercept reveals a plot to assassinate England's 'sea dragon', Francis Drake, Shakespeare is ordered to protect him. With Drake on land fitting out his ships, he is frighteningly vulnerable. If he dies, England will be open to invasion.

From the splendour and intrigue of the royal court, to the sleek warships of Her Majesty's Navy and the teeming brothels of Southwark, Shakespeare soon learns that nothing is as it seems . . .

Revenger

The quiet life of John Shakespeare is shattered by a summons from Robert Cecil, the cold but deadly young statesman who dominated the last years of the Queen's long reign, insisting Shakespeare re-enter government service. His mission: to find vital papers, now in the possession of the Earl of Essex.

When John Shakespeare infiltrates this dissolute world he discovers not only that the Queen herself is in danger - but that he and his family is also a target. With only his loyal footsoldier Boltfoot Cooper at his side, Shakespeare must face implacable forces who believe themselves above the law. And in a world of shifting allegiances, just how far he can trust Robert Cecil, his devious new master?

Prince

Driven on by cold rage, Shakespeare's investigations will take him from magnificent royal horseraces to the opulent chambers of Black Luce's brothel, from the theatrical underworld of Marlowe and Kyd to the pain-wracked torture cells of priest-hunter Richard Topcliffe, and from the elegant offices of master tactician Robert Cecil to the splintering timbers of an explosive encounter at sea.

As Shakespeare delves ever deeper, he uncovers intricate layers of mystery and deception that threaten the heart not only of the realm, but of all that he holds dear.

Several years later, the first book in this too-short 2-book series, The 13th Fellow, is free at Kindle US and UK. I do wish Whiting would write some more books in this series. Sigh!

Both these titles are a little more chick-lit-y than I usuallly like, but there's enough academic snark in there to balance out, IMO. Triptych by Karin Slaughter (first book in the Will Trent series) is £0.99 in the UK.
Quote:
From Atlanta’s wealthiest suburbs to its stark inner-city housing projects, a killer has crossed the boundaries of wealth and race. And the people who are chasing him must cross those boundaries, too. Among them is Michael Ormewood, a veteran detective whose marriage is hanging by a thread—and whose arrogance and explosive temper are threatening his career. And Angie Polaski, a beautiful vice cop who was once Michael’ s lover before she became his enemy. But unbeknownst to both of them, another player has entered the game: a loser ex-con who has stumbled upon the killer’s trail in the most coincidental of ways—and who may be the key to breaking the case wide open.

In this gritty, gripping firecracker of a novel, the author of the bestselling Grant County, Georgia, series breaks thrilling new ground, weaving together the threads of a complex, multilayered story with the skill of a master craftsman. Packed with body-bending switchbacks, searing psychological suspense and human emotions, Triptych ratchets up the tension one revelation at a time as it races to a shattering and unforgettable climax.
