Octavia E. Butler's Bloodchild and Other Stories recently got pulled from the Kobo store and I can't figure out for the life of me why. Totally gone. Still on my wishlist, but clicking through gets a 404.

Check Amazon and see if it's on Kindle Unlimited. If not, is possible the publishing rights for the digital edition expired. That happens.

I picked up that book a while back from Kobo in (I think) an Open Road Media edition. When I look at Kobo now, the editions of Octavia E. Butler's books they are selling are published by Grand Central Publishing (a division of Hachette). When I check GCP's web page, they do not have an edition of Bloodchild and Other Stories.

There is also a version from Seven Stories Press of Bloodchild and Other Stories.

Incredible – it was indeed the ORIM edition which remains on my wishlist, but I'm really glad to know I can get it from Seven Stories instead. And clicking around their website a little bit, it seems that all their ebooks are sold unencumbered by DRM. Amazing! Thank you so much for sharing this!

edit: Wow, just noticed they also try to bundle ebooks with the physical copies you buy from them, too. That's excellent!

when you read a book, find it written poorly/not very good, but then everyone on the Goodreads page is going on about how it's the best thing since sliced bread. Sometimes I wonder if I'm even reading the same book as them.

Ohhhh, yes, I know THAT feeling. (I felt that way about the whole 50SOG thing and also about the dreaded Twifright.) Just as two examples only.

It's just a reminder that Goodreads is Amazon-owned, so fake reviews is to be expected.

Fake reviews didn't sell metric ton of Twilight or Fifty Shades of Gray. People do genuinely like those books.

I just remember George Carlin:
Quote:
“Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.”

I'm generally not interested in good reviews, unless it's from someone I "know". People like books for all sorts of reasons that are irrelevant to me, and why shouldn't they? I focus on the thoughtful two-star reviews, to see if the reasons the reviewer didn't like the book resonate with me. After all, if I'm looking, I'm already interested; negative input is more valuable. I do at least start with two-star reviews, as one-star reviews tend more to the "Awful" line, which doesn't tell me anything.

It's also possible you just have different taste. Most people have guilty pleasures and enjoy reading certain things that others would find unbearable.

Nah, the TV Typewriter Cookbook is more fun. I still remember running some of his Postscripts bits on old laser printers.

Maybe the reviews and blurbs have occasionally been done by sockpuppets and bots for years?
