Why on earth don't all software developers and testers (at the very least of a certain, well known company) have to use ridiculously old computers. I fail to understand why it takes so long on PCs running their software. Same hardware, booted into any of a range of Linux distros does almost all the same operations in a tiny fraction of the time. Now if they had to use aged, slow computers they would have a reason for spending time making the software run faster, rather than ensuring that the software requires n-quillion BluRay's for their distribution. And whilst I'm at it, why don't they use proper compilers... First off, their language is just different enough to break things if you try porting. Next they invariably result in programs that run far slower. And then they pack it all up in an annoying development environment that they update in a non-compatible form every year or two. Any why the heck do they need such huge intermediary files.......... |

But, when I am building and compiling the software and running automated functional tests I need to fastest that I can have so I am more productive. If I have to wait 5,10,20 minutes during each edit/compile/build cycle I can't be very productive. Also, profiling on a faster machine runs alot faster, but I can still see if a loop or something is taking a high percentage of time relatively I know where I need to optimize. That said, today's customers demand applications that are very graphic and network and hard drive intense. They don't want to do "batch" processing they want it to happen now. Many times the answer is, get a faster machine. Back to my rant... I am not talking about some $3000 PC these days. Your basic off the shelf $500-$800 PC with a Core 2 Duo 2.66+Ghz machine with a 500GB 7200RPM 3Gbs SATA hard drive is more than enough for the work I am talking about. The machine I am ranting about is a P4 1.7GHz with 512MB of RAM running Windows 2000 Workstation. Really? There is no need for this PC to be plugged in... except that they don't give us something better. BOb |

For some reason I keep putting that rant in the accent of that British comedian who dresses in drag and whose name escapes me and whom I can't Asakte because I'm on my mobile right now.

Damn... subversion takes a long time to dump a repository. Damn part duex that dump file is about 3x the size of the repository. I thought this upgrade would only take about 10 minutes.
At least I can do other things while it is dumping. BOb (Oh and this is on a fast dual core 3GHz Xenon server. Not that old PC I was venting about yesterday.) |
