Looks to be a textbook. Those tend to be locked down more heavy and KFX-only. I also see a notice indicating that it's locked down (e.g. newest versions required and it doesn't work for Cloud Reader).

When I checked earlier this week, the Bluestacks method worked. But if you want to check for yourself, go to eReaderIQ, find a free book (published after Jan of this year), and try it.

Interested to know how I can tell if a recent book from here (see above) is KFX encoded or not. I use the Bluestacks method and it still works for me...

Is there a know 'signature' that KFX books have which I might see in a hex editor?

I think you can check for "enhanced typesetting" on the Amazon store page.

EDIT: No. That's whether a book is available as KFX, not whether it's only available as KFX.

There is usually a list of supported devices on the product page. The lack of any e-ink devices on the list means no azw3/KF8 support (KFX only , print replica, etc).

I just checked a few books, but couldn't find the list. Maybe it is not present when all devices are supported or maybe it is just general amazon web page flakiness.

Unable to get Kindle Key
Hi,

I was able to do all the steps up and get a backup file with a few megabytes worth of data. The only problem I am having is with the Kindle Key. I am using the Kindle app on Bluestacks and am unsure how to get the Kindle Key. I tried going into the settings of the app and checking the Amazon website, but it doesn't show anything. Any help would be appreciated.

The key should be in that large backup file. You can go through calibre preferences => Plugins. Locate the DeDRM plugin and click on customize. Open Kindle for Android ebooks, click on Import existing keyfiles and follow the prompts.

Not being as tech savy as some of the folks here, it took me several hours to work thru the original process on a Windows 11 PC. I made notes and took screenshots and essentially process mapped to create instructions for those like me who may not be familiar with use of SDK Platform Tools or Command Prompt. I hope this helps! A big thank you to Ownedbycats for coming up with this method!

Please see my PDF in post #308 above. It gives you the step by step process on how to extract the key for the Bluestacks method. It's all the same material and links presented by Owedbycats, but I think you'll find it easier to follow the flow. Good luck!

Wondering if these instructions will be the same for Windows 10 as I haven't upgraded to Windows 11.

I actually made a typo and this was in fact done with Windows 10. However, I agree that it should work for either version.

I've installed Bluestacks on both Windows 10 and Windows 11 and ran into no issues using the same install procedure with both other than matching the port.

I've only tested it with one book that was released on 1/30/23 but it worked great!

Thank you very much for the step by step instructions. They were super easy to follow and I've saved them if I ever have to do a reinstall ::shudder:: of everything.

Great instructions, thanks so much for writing this up!

Worked using a Samsung S21 with the Amazon Kindle 4.16.0.75-1145045067 app and an Ubuntu 22.04 laptop
