edit : never mind, i just realised it's a film. for a second i thought it was a book of his dialogues, which would be brilliant.

We should definitely have a poll or a vote of some kind.

Exactly. Furthermore, I think, (and others can override me on this) we need to swap types of movies every month. For example, comedy one month, detective another month, musical the next month, ect... In addition, if it was based on a readily available book, include the book in the discussion.

Just some thoughts.

Let me give an example. Topper (1937 - Cary Grant). Good comedy, based on the book by (drawing a blank, drat my memory), which is on MR as an e-book, to boot.

Definitely switch them out every month, and it would be cool if we could somehow tie them into reading the book (if available).

I looked it over and noticed no musicals. We ought to throw in a Alice Faye/Carmen Miranda musical. I'll throw in The Gang's All Here.

What we seem to have now is endless comic-book movies with bigger and bigger explosions, tired serial-killer thrillers, torture-pornography horror, and unfunny comedies. There's been very little on release in the last five years that has drawn me to the cinema. And if I see one more remake I think I might give up altogether.
One of the things I've always admired about '2001 A Space Odyssey' is that film was made without computer generated special effects that films like 'Star Wars' had. All the scenes in 2001, like the astronauts jogging weightless around the spacecraft were on actual sets. They built the set and rotated it as the astronaut jogged making it appear he was weightless. Ditto the stewardess walking from coach to first class on the spaceship.

Okay, okay, I like HAL too. In fact, notice what you end up with if you move each letter in HAL's name one letter to the right in the alphabet.

excellent ! i was just wondering to myself how public domain works for films, and whether there were some kind of database for them like gutenberg for books. maybe we could start with a pd one, so we can be sure everyone can get it ?
