If chatGPT can already create essays that do not trigger plagiarism detection systems they'd likely already meet the legal definition of new/original works.

I'm not really concerned with how I look (my lack of fashion sense would be clear evidence of this) nor do I feel any desire to defend or justify chatGPT (and certainly not Micro$oft). I'm simply expressing an opinion I believe to be true, always content in being an honest pariah over a popular liar.

As systems like chatGPT evolve, the content they output will become increasingly complex to the point where the definitions used to identify AI generated content will start to be triggered by a growing percentage of human generated content. Computer algorithms are already superior at weeding out AI from human generated content, so the "expert humans" in Courts will be software devs with verdicts based on statistical data generated by the detection algorithms.

We can all think of two books/movies that have very similar themes, narrative and archetypes without thinking one was plagiarised by the other. Inspired perhaps? I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that an AI system could adapt one story enough as to appear like new albeit similar content in the same way.

I'd think that Tolkien was in the wrong field. While his books earned him eternal fame, his decades early work in artificial intelligence would have won him a Nobel prize, surely.

Anyone besides me have a favorite book and a favorite author, but their favorite author did NOT write their favorite book?

I love The Hobbit and have since I was a kid. But don't really care about The Lord of the Rings and the rest.

Steinbeck is my favorite author.

One problem with AI is that it cannot come up with something original.

It's like all those Roger Corman and Italian knock-offs of Alien or Star Wars. It's easy enough to churn out works 'in the spirit of'. But there has to be the originals to base the work on.

You will (correctly) point out that Star Wars itself was based on the old Flash Gordon serials. But the point is, when it was made, nobody had any confidence in it. The smart money was on Damnation Alley. That's why Lucas was able to buy the rights back. And the rest is history.

What AI is going to go against the grain and create something that unexpectedly captures the zeitgeist? What AI is going to whip up Harry Potter, The DaVinci Code, Twilight, Fifty Shades of Gray or any of the other sleeper hits that come in and change the market?
