Read the Queen of Swords, the second Corum book by Moorcock. I love the Eternal Champion series. Nice and short and jam packed with sorcerous adventures

And very good it was too. Surprisingly compelling for a prequel. And now I find it's part of a trilogy with an unpublished (so far) third part. However, this first book has a satisfying ending, not a cliff-hanger.

Next up: Passengers to Sentience by Peter Salisbury

I'm glad to see your review, Paul. I started this when it first came out, and somehow didn't get into it in the first 10% or so and let the loan at the library lapse. Based on this, I'll give it another chance and check it out again. Thanks.

Just finished Station Eleven by Hilary St John Mandel, interesting read and given recent events I glad I read it now rather that a few years ago!

I just completed Dana Stabenow's newest Kate Shugak Mystery, Not the Ones Dead and Dean Koontz's newest Science Fiction Thriller, The House at the End of the World. I rated both 5 stars.

I don't read Koontz, but I agree completely that Not the Ones Dead is a superb addition to the series.

Enjoying Starding Rising even more than Sundiver. Still quite a ways left to go, but so far I'm enjoying more of the great worldbuilding Brin did in Sundiver; the development of the intercivilizational dynamics of the Galactic community and the (totally seamless, plot-driven) incorporation of ecological considerations. The story ties in with the larger setting really well in a way that I find both engaging to read, but also interesting in its broader implications. It's what I enjoyed about the first book and it's even better in the second.

Also revisiting the “Audio Renaissance” edition of Dune, narrated by Simon Vance (and a cast of others). I listened to this same recording many years ago but thought it was time for a revisit as a possible entry into the later books in the series, which I haven't yet read.

The Drawing of the Dark by Tim Powers. Ancient Magical Beer that ferments on the grave of some ancient irish guy will save western civilization. By the time I got to the end and realized THAT was the thrust of the story, I just had to laugh. Only Powers....

Day Zero by C. Robert Cargill.

A prequel to Sea of Rust. This book was a nice surprise. It certainly was more than a shoot-em-up robot apocalypse. Well written with emotional elements that can be heartbreaking. I'm leerier of AI after reading this. Well-done. Rated B [4 stars].

Next, Planetside by Michael Mammay, a recent-ish purchase.

Yes, I thought it was excellent. Be warned though, the second volume ends with a huge cliff-hanger, so it could be worth waiting for the third volume to be published.

Since I last posted, I've read A View of the Harbour by Elizabeth Taylor which was excellent. My favorite of her novels that I've read.

I've started:
  • They Were Found Wanting by Miklós Bánffy, the second of his Transylvania Trilogy. Jury's still out on whether it will be as fun and compelling as the first. So far it's been going over old ground.
  • Red Land, Black Land by Barbara Mertz, which is somewhat folksier than I'd like, but given how little I know about ancient Egypt it might be just as well.

Speaker for the Dead by Orson Card. Completely different beast than Ender's Game. I can see why I quit the Enderverse back in '01 when I read this for the first time. It was too abrupt a change in tone for me then.
