Yes and no.
I read the first book, because I was forced to read it as a part of school curriculum. I believe in 7th grade? Hated it. Idiotic book. Thanks heaven he never properly finished book 2, if I am not mistaken. After I read the first 8 book of WoT and wanted to buy the next one, I realised it was not published! But I wanted to know what happen to characters after book 8, RIGHT NOW! and I was denied it. So frustrating! Then, I gave myself a word, never again to read an unfinished series. So far, so good ![]() |

Just take books 5 - 8, cross out the numbers on the covers, and write in 9, 10, 11 and 12. You're good to go!

What I was trying to get at is that there are alternative models to the publishing industry. Perhaps we should open a thread to brainstorm alternative distribution and compensation models for authors. And there probably won't be a theory-of-everything, a one-size-fits-all model for every kind of writing. We will likely need a whole big grab-bag of ingenious solutions. But this seems to me to be an excellent place to come up with them. After all, this is pretty much THE forum for future modes of reading.
In the end, as far as I'm concerned at least, the goal is preserving and promoting literature and culture, not the publishing houses. And our governments are too out of touch with technology to do anything but play catch-up (and too beholden to the business interests of the publishing companies, music industry, etc.). In other words, it's up to us. note: I am not anti-government by any means, but the role of government is more regulatory - it is rarely the source of innovation (though it sometimes provides support and the means for large-scale implementation). Cheers! |

Gogol is a very good writer and Dead Souls is a significant work (this is why it's usually part of Russian lit school curriculum.) Have you ever considered that it may have been over your 7th grade head? Comics, may be... ![]() |

Although the same applies to any Russian classic. I didn't read one russian classic book I enjoyed or found it bearable at least (well maybe War and Peace had a few "OK moments" that were not about war). But Gogol is probably one of the worst of them. |

I liked Dead Souls a great deal, though didn't read it until I was in my thirties.
It is possible that you were too young to appreciate the irony, Astra. And you may not have had an inspiring teacher. |

I used to be solidly above board on book purchases. I own something like 900 paperback books and about 120 ebooks. But then I started seeing the books I wanted only on the kindle platform and no where else. I had to resort to alternate methods to grab some of them. I own paper copies of most of the ebooks I've 'acquired' by whatever method. Once my 'alternate' method was used a few times it became so easy that I couldn't help myself. FYI there is a library floating around out there with 15000 ebooks......... I will say this, I've gone out my of way for 3 authors who I really liked and sent them 10 dollars each for their works.

Given sony Gives you 100 Free Ebook Downloads, Google has (50,000 or is it 500,000) E-Books for download for free.
I guess you could say I get a large majority of my E-Books for Free. |

Something occurred to me so I thought I'd ask for clarification.....
Most of the arguments used by "file-sharers"(as opposed to copiers or pirates I suppose) to argue that "file-sharing" is not wrong, seem to stem from one or more of the following..... 1: The old method is outdated. Big corporations are trying to protect their profits at the expense of authors, the consumers etc. This is bad. 2: The price is too high. Ebooks really should be alot cheaper to produce and market than pbooks. Therefore, charging the same or more for an ebook just isn't right. 3: DRM is like a license and not like owning the book. If one is to purchase the book, one should own the book and not a license. 4: They use "file-sharing" as a way to sample a product and have every intention of purchasing a legitimate copy if they like it.(seems to contradict point number 2 but whatever) So, what I wanted clarified was.......... Let us, for the sake of argument, assume there is book out there that is self published, thereby assuring all profits go to the author, it is DRM free, it is reasonably priced and easily obtainable legally and one can sample the first 5 chapters free of charge to see if they like it or not. In this case, would "file-sharing" the full text of the ebook through a mechanism such as p2p to unknown persons be considered wrong? Would obtaining a copy of said book through such a mechanism as p2p be wrong? Cheers, PKFFW |
