I'm beginning to wonder if we need a "cruelty to animals" tag to filter individual posts. (Also good for "so-called jokes about animals in quite poor taste.")

I think the kitten photo would have been fine without the remark.... Thanks for making me look up "vermicious knid"! It was driving me crazy not to be able to remember where I'd heard it!

The problem is who decides? I remember a piccie of an angora rabbit in an old thread that I thought was more distressing than the cat-in-a-microwave one - but that was considered ok as far as I recall.

Also, people could get upset for being considered cruel when no such intent was meant.

It does seem that cats have a special status in many people's eyes.

P.S. I see there's a new thread about cooking bacon, with a video (I haven't watched) - to tag, or not to tag?

I'm not objecting to it, even though I don't want to see it; but we could object to stuff all day just because it pushes our personal 'distasteful' button.

I think you're right-- in both directions. There seem to be quite a few people on this forum who really like cats. On the other hand, there seem to be a few people who go out of their way to make nasty comments about cats whenever possible. Dogs have owners, cats have staff.

Seriously though, this seems like a lot of effort to avoid paw prints. A disproportionate amount of effort if you ask me. Mats that need to be purchased and put in place and then removed, water pistols, magnets and so on. What is really needed is a working filter system. The same filters system that allow us to ignore billboards and other such evidence that would otherwise lead us to conclude that our planet has been in the care of a pack of malicious trolls.

In order to perhaps lighten the mood regarding cats, I am including an email I received several weeks ago. I have no idea who wrote it. It's just one of those email thingys that gets passed around.

Day 983 of my captivity...

My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nugget.

Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength.

The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape. In an attempt to disgust them, I once again vomit on the carpet.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a 'good little hunter' I am.

There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of 'allergies.' I must learn what this means and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released - and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded.

The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. My captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe. For now................
