AZW/MOBI file will not convert to anything else

I have an AZW/MOBI file will not convert to anything (tried AZW3, EPUB2, EPUB3. Always gets stuck on 'Flattening...' step. It is fairly large (59.2MB). It loaded in Viewer. Downloaded fresh copy from Amazon, same thing.

Anything to check/try?

Thank you.

Is it a Fixed layout type? If so it may not convert.
"not encrypted", hmm.
Or maybe it's reflowable and too big.

My Verne incomplete "Complete Works" is 10.3 Mbyte and azw3 and converted OK.
Seems to be same 47 novels as yours (but cheaper).
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0777TKN3L/
Converted fine.

I also have Celebrated Travels and Travellers in 3 parts (maybe from Gutenberg), 55.9, 51.1 and 48.6 and all converted. (2008 version, downloaded August 2021).
Just searched:
https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/sea...t_search=Go%21
Seems that's where those came from.
Total 75 ebooks credited to Verne in the Calibre Library.

Only The castle of the Carpathians and Jules Verne: The Collection (20.000 Leagues Under the Sea, Journey to the Interior of the Earth, Around the World in 80 Days, The Mysterious Island...) from Amazon. The rest are PD. Some From Standard eBooks.

Thanks, I've started getting these direct from the Delphi (ePub). For another $1 they include 'parts' (separate files for each book).

I tried another large omnibus MOBI from a different publisher with the same result (seems to stall out at 47%), while another similar, large one that starts in AZW3 pauses a bit at 47%, but then continues and finishes. So it seems specific to MOBI. Another common feature: very large ToC (at least 1200 entries).

It's possible it just takes awhile, but job is running for 25 minutes already, and there is no memory pressure or significant CPU load. I'll let it go longer to see if it manages to finish.

Update: still spinning its wheels after 2 hours. "it's dead, Jim"

47% is a standard 'looks like nothing' point. The next status jump can be MANY many many HOURS (in the past, 24 was not unheard of for very large or complex books. Yours is Large)

whelp, I guess time heals all things. I can wait, I guess.

It's odd I'm only seeing this with MOBI, however. and only with certain large ones.

Not odd at all - depends on how the input file was built - some are linear trees others are cans of worms.

I let it run overnight: 16h36m. I cannot help but think there is something wrong with the calibre code. I may have to take another crack at setting up debugger.

Or the ebook. Sadly not azw3 so tricky to peak at innards. I was half tempted to buy the version you got, but apart from the illustrations it seems the same content as the one I got (47 novels)

It's for both Mobi & KF8. But only KF8 can be converted to ePub (with errors).

It'll unpack a mobi but really not much use unless you want to look at the files. I've used it once to unpack a stubborn .mobi file, did a quick and dirty edit on the html file and then imported the html file into Sigil. A quick convert inline CSS into stylesheet and some cleanup finished the job. The author of the ebook did not have her original manuscript and wanted to do some editing for a new edition after the rights reverted.

So for Mobi it's the equivalent of renaming an .epub to .zip and unpacking the archive, which is rather less useful than Sigil or Calibre Editor but lets you see the innards.

However you'd want to be fairly knowledgeable about HTML with inline styles and though a lot of the 59 MB is images, maybe 8 to 10 MByte of Styled HTML files as it's 47 novels. I'd sooner accept my losses and buy the 88p version with same 47 novels that's azw3 and does convert to epub. Then you can always amuse yourself adding the illustrations from the unpacked mobi to your epub version.
