to get the proper nickname for your kindle, then check that against the first post in the above thread.

Once your kindle is jailbroken, you can fake register it.
Thank you! I really appreciate that.

I was able to run the jailbreak (thank you). What do I need to do to "fake register it"? When I hacked the Fire, there is a GUI that aids in the various options. Is there anything like that for the Kindle? or ... ?

Search for threads tagged fake registration. KUAL is the only GUI for running various addons, but I don't know of any KUAL extensions for kindle configuation.

You used to be able to register a Kindle with a minimum of an Amazon Gift Card (only if card bought in USA marketplace, but that can be done by say a UK user) and a working email without any payment method or address. Then the Kindle Account would be in the USA Marketplace but without an address.

I've stated this before, but I don't understand why people get Kindles hoping they will be to their liking without registering them. Inevitably they will not be. They're designed for people who like the walled garden experience, as I mostly do.

And jail breaking is a pain for most people, and with a Kindle, you can never enjoy convenience of wireless again without worrying it will undo. Koreader is not everbody's cup of tea (not mine anyway).

Get a Kobo or PocketBook.

On newer FW there is no jailbreak. Also Kobo you don't need KOReader, but no jailbreaking needed to install it.

It's got progressively harder since non-touch models of Kindle to manage anything locally. You need the internet and Amazon account.

My Kindles NEVER go online, anyway. They are ALWAYS in Airplane Mode. With every device I have, be it a video game console or ebook reader, one of the first thing that I always do is jailbreak it. Mainly because I prefer for MY hardware to behave the way I want it to behave, not the way I'm TOLD it should behave. I do not register any device or software online. I do not allow devices or software to ever "phone home." And if something will not work with "phoning home" or otherwise requiring any cloud-based service, I do not use it. Period.

My original Kindle was the only exception that I've ever made to that rule, and that was because I was, at the time, downloading books from Amazon, so it just made sense. Once I realized, though, that not only were books that I had side loaded disappearing, but that everything I did was logged and sent to the mothership, I put a stop to that as well.

If you like the walled garden experience... that's great... for you. For other's, not much. Now that _I_ control MY device, I am much happier with it.

Still, you had to work to get there. Why not get a different brand that isn't fighting you so much?

I'm an odd cookie. I enjoy the journey more than the destination.

Wait...you're saying that you had books that you sideloaded to the device disappear? And you think that they were removed by Amazon? Can you please give me an example of a book that you sideloaded to your device that was removed by Amazon?

I've had Kindles since the very first one, and I've been sideloading from the very beginning. I've also been active in e-reading forums for about the same length of time. I've *never* heard of a sideloaded book being removed by Amazon.

There were a couple. I can't remember the names, but I am sure that "1984" was one of them.

Odd. That happened back in 2009 and the only version of 1984 that was removed was an unauthorized version from MobileReference. And from what I remember, it was only removed if it was purchased from Amazon since the removal was done over Whispernet and was specific to that edition. Oddly, no one seems to have complained that at the same time, the unauthorized edition of Animal Farm from the same source was also removed.

1984 is more iconic, and perhaps more relatable dystopian story than Animal Farm, which is a fable.

But both involve erasing history, which is sort of what Amazon was called out for (did they issue refunds?).

I reported (to publisher as well) a bootleg of Gödel, Escher, Bach. I see it is still listed, but at least says 'The Kindle title is not currently available for purchase'. One bootleg down, 2 million to go (and no doubt ChatGPT creations ramping up).
