300ppi and I would have bought it. (If I get the chance to try it, I may still buy it for the writing functionality.) |

The Sage is better for notes than the Elipsa. IMO the Elipsa is only good either for proofing PDF layout (the 227 dpi is enough but sometimes screen isn't big enough) or PDFs if you have not so good eyesight, or epub if you have bad eyesight.
I got the Sage after the Elipsa and now never use the Elipsa for writing/notes. Both are far better than the remarkable which I gave away a short while ago. I was tempted to the Kindle Scribe for PDF proofing but the crazy system that has for PDF annotation absolutely negates the 300 dpi. I've a Kindle PW3 and recently gave away an Oasis (gen2 32G + Mobile) because annotation, series, collections etc is so much poorer on Kindle than Kobo with Calibre. Even for Amazon titles the series system is poor and collections break if you have sideloaded or a mobi only Kindle on the same account. So I won't upgrade till there is a larger than 10.3″ Kobo with at least 227 dpi and ideally more. Current larger eink are too expensive and too low dpi (lower than Elipsa). |

I find it interesting that there is a difference at all with notetaking on the two devices.
Maybe I'll wait for Sage 2E. My Forma still works very well (as does my Aura HD, that's one amazing reader, still use it when I travel). |

No doubt the Sage and original Elipsa will get FW updates, which will be here: https://pgaskin.net/KoboStuff/kobofirmware.html The Sage is an better size and weight to hold in one hand while writing with the other. There is no advantage to the larger lower DPI screen for the Advanced Notebook. Only for proofing PDF layout, or if you have poorer than average eyesight acuity even with reading glasses. Edit: The E on Clara 2E and Elipsa 2E models may stand for Eco or Environment, due to increased use of recycled plastic on case and cover. However given that an ereader has a 5 to 20 year life that's not so critical as a drink bottle or pen. Last edited by Quoth; 04-10-2023 at 07:15 AM. |

We'll find out soon enough. Eventually Kobo will update the Clara, Libra, and Sage again, although I'd expect the Nia to get updated first, unless Kobo discontinues it. Most Kobos are at feature parity now, so the next refresh will probably introduce new features of some kind that will eventually get rolled out to every model.

The battery life on a Sage is reasonable. Four in the family have them and no-one is complaining. It's just not as good as some other ereaders (My Mars 7.8″ is worse and the 4.7″ Y-Beb P47L is terrible, but usable on the go.
They could make the case from recycled plastic, maybe add a slightly bigger battery, ditch all the magnets and the power case adaptor. The magnets are annoying. However it would only be for new Kobo users, like Libra 2 over Libra, or Elipsa 2 vs Elipsa, it wouldn't be a sensible upgrade for an existing Sage owner. I hope they don't add so-called "wireless charging" (though it's not radio based but inductive it's inefficient and creates radio interference) as it's ecologically unsound and you need a USB cable charger to read while charging. |

The original Elipsa has 2 x 1200mAh batteries; the 2E has exactly the same capacity as the Elipsa. So any improved battery life in the 2E must be related to the more efficient CPU. |

It’s possible that the new batteries offer greater efficiency. We’ll know soon enough. But having a better CPU will be much appreciated when using the notebooks feature. I often encounter lagging, ghosting, and crashes if my notebooks get too long. I would hope that the new CPU could handle them better. |

So.... Is there going to be an update to give some of these software updates? I know obviously the second light isn't possible. I don't mind buying a new pen as long as it works. Some of these software updates are pretty significant

The pen is basically a rechargeable version of the existing model with a different button layout. Similar compatible models sold as cheap 3rd party pens for MS Surface.
Usually Kobo does backports of new features and changes and bug fixes to all models that it's possible to support. So really the only thing is the comfort light, eventually. |

You’ll definitely see several updates after the release this week as they bug fix, but whether the FW updates include the older Elipsa remains to be seen. |
