Not sure if the manual mentions it, I don't think I read the pictures, but the magnets are symmetrical on the Scribe. So when I first plopped it in, the thick bezel was on the left, opposite where the Oasis has it (for me). Weird. Days later I find out that you can stick the Scribe in upside down with thick bezel on the right

Arguably wide bezel on left is right side up (look at logo on back), and as a right-handed person, that's usually how I hold it.

You need to be able to use right hand for the Pen, and hold with left most of the time.

Oasis was also biased to right-handed people as generally you would use dominant hand to operate page turn buttons.

But logo aside, it is symmetric vertically so neither device is 'biased'.

With my clear case, the Pen is secured in clip on 'bottom' and I often hold it with my right hand on the side where the Pen would be.

That is true. I looked at the logo, and leave it button to the left. If I switch hands or hold it with both, I usually leave it with the big bezel on the left. This way the pen is in the middle and you can hold it with the pen in there as an extra grip. The small bezel on the other side is wide enough to hold it either hand. Plus, if you hold it and touch the screen and keep holding it touching the whole time it won't page forward or back. So that is a nice feature - that works on the Oasis as well - rest your finger on the screen in the same spot for a while, and no action is taken. Only danger is comics, where it might still fast forward.

I keep the wide bezel on the right and hold with my right hand. The left is much too narrow to hold without page turning and that randomly happens no matter what. If I need to use my right hand I rotate it 180 and hold the wide bezel with my left. I have no clue which way they think is up or down as I believe that's just a matter of personal choice by each user.

Just a follow-up on my quick "review" from a few days ago, I received my replacement Scribe and am happy to say that the new one has a more uniformly lit screen than the previous one. So it's a bit of a long shot, but in case someone is in the market for a Scribe in Germany, the current batch of 64GB Scribes might have better aligned LEDs than the 32GB batch.

I also got the official cover in burgundy and was rather unsettled by the color "in person"; the shade leans more towards purple and less towards red than I imagined, giving the cover what might be a more feminine touch than, say, the merlot cover for the Oasis. Other people I showed it to had a similar feeling, so that might be a heads-up to potential buyers. I swapped it for the black one.

Did Amazon allow you to switch the covers, or did you return and get black? Glad your Scribe is better lit now. Maybe it is the 64GB in general as mine looks very even as well.

I returned it and got the black one. Actually I also returned the charger which came in the Essentials bundle as I really don’t have much use for it (I got the bundle because it was cheaper than a Scribe and cover bought separately); I was surprised that I could return the items individually since, well, it’s a bundle after all, but it turns out it’s possible to do so.

This is worth knowing. It makes me feel better about getting the bundle without doing a trade-in. I had originally planned to do a trade-in before Prime Day and get a Scribe then. But they had a sale last month, and when I found a bundle for the high end Scribe for $325.97, I ordered it. With tax, it came to $352.05. It turned out that I wasn't satisfied with the cover, and I didn't need the power adapter. Fortunately, I was able to return them, and I got refunded $71.82. This brought my cost for the high end Scribe down to $280.23. Given that the original price was $419.99, the 15% discount I was sometimes seeing would bring that down to $356.99, and an additional 20% discount due to a trade-in would bring it down to $285.59. Since this is still the pre-tax price, and I paid less than that for the total price, I came off pretty well and got to keep the Paperwhite 4 I had been planning to trade in.

I also bought a couple of extra cases and returned one. The case I kept cost me $17.19 on ebay, and the case I returned cost me a total of $28.07 minus the $21.08 refund I got. So, altogether, my costs were $304.41. If it weren't for the case I returned, they would be $297.42.

I included a link in the description of the video.

It's not clear what it is good for, but if you rest the Pen on the middle of the bezel just right, it will put Scribe to sleep.

Where are the updates? Is there any reason to think the recent massive layoffs at Amazon impacted Scribe development/release cadence? Just wonder what is taking them so long to deliver features announced at launch.

They are dragging their feet, so that they keep their job until they deliver what was promised.

Device: Boox Nova Pro & Kindle Scribe
I took the plunge and bought a Kindle Scribe as it was on sale. It's my first Kindle though I used the Kindle app on my Boox Nova Pro. I chose the Scribe because of the price and hardware and I did not want the camera on the Boox Tab Ultra (the contender).

Hardware wise, it's really great. Software wise, it's half baked but no surprise as I had read the reviews.

What surprises me the most is the absence of some kind of file explorer. I use Collections to group books and documents but it's not perfect.

I use Calibre to export books on the Scribe. The covers appear on Calibre but only for epub on Kindle. I have a generic cover for pdf books and articles. Very strange as the covers are fine on Calibre. If I could display the covers and have subcollections, it would be great.

Is there a way to switch easily between a book and a notebook? Boox has the nav ball but on the Scribe I have to close the book and go to notes to open the notebook. A back button would have been handy.

The good surprise is that an Italian dictionary is present for Italian books. It's not on the general settings where I could select only 2 dictionaries. Very useful as I had to switch to an Italian dictionary app on my Nova Pro.

That's not generally how it works: the least productive people get fired first.

But apparently a lot of 'middle managers' were on the chopping block (higher salaries?) and maybe the people lower down are getting another look from their new manager before they get fired.

In any case, huge layoffs are bad for morale, especially when other large companies (even Apple) are laying people off.
