I totally agree Bob. More expensive doesn't always mean better but just as there are examples of when it doesn't mean better there are as many examples of when more expensive does mean better. It's a ying and yang thing.
We have this little T.V. show here in Canada for consumers. It's called "Market Place". The general tenor of the show is to expose fraudulent activities for any number of consumer entry items found in the market place hence the name. A few seasons back they did an expose on appliances marked with the "UL" tag, sticker or embossing and discovered that there are a great many items that were labeled as such did NOT in fact pass muster in terms of it's required quality control or even the listed specifications for said appliance. Basically, have Underwriters Laboratories sticker - will sell. Can this happen with Sony products, sure. There are plenty of examples of grey market products that are misrepresented as the "real deal" and that pose a danger to consumers. I would rather not see the, as another user here put it, "magic smoke" rise from my Sony PRS-505 just because I purchased a power adapter that may or may not meet the power requirements of unit in question or even meet the input/output specifications listed on the charger itself. That would suck big time. I agree with most of you when you collectively say that it's a matter of personal choice. It's your investment, it's your decision. Respect. |

Keeping costs low will help me on my next reader. Once Sony comes out with an actual upgrade worth having that is.
Even the cheapest of these chargers will have a resistor in it. I've head of some of them smoking, which just burns the resistor. So the resistor basically acts as a fuse as well. Something would have to go really wrong for a surge of power to get into your reader. Alter the battery effectiveness with a lower ampage? Who knows, I don't know enough about batteries... Either way the warranty is gone after a year, which I'm pretty sure the battery will last. After that I'll be using the service manual to change the battery. I agree, charger should have came with it. But 29.99 for a name brand charger is certainly not for me... No offense, but I bet you're a fan of extended warranties! ![]() |

I've learned a few things in this thread and look forward to getting a reliable charger for significantly less than $30.
The interesting debate that emerged contains valid points on both sides (as is often the case). The multi-dimensional nature of reality is best understood by considering multiple viewpoints. We can find examples where paying more brings a corresponding increase in quality/features and examples where a premium is paid for name-recognition and other forms of hype. Likewise, good quality/features can sometimes be found at bargain prices, but the possibility of shoddy products increases among lesser known brands and at a lower price point where consumers understandably tend to spend less time on research. As always there are exceptions so it's a game of probability. Basically, the seller is armed with marketing and reputation while the smart buyer is armed with research appropriate to the potential cost and time at stake. "Let the buyer beware." Now if I can only figure out how I ended up writing such a long-winded post. ![]() |

I went to Target and found a "Psyclone Essentials AC adapter for PSP 2000". Anyone else using this brand? Price was $15.46. Not the best bargain here, but a lot better than $30.

![]() I have to say that the best accessory that I have bought for the PRS-505 is a book light; the Mighty Bright TravelFlex edition. I tried the Sony light wedge style unit with the integrated book cover and I have to say the Mighty Bright is 100 percent better and 50 dollars cheaper. I guess you can teach a old dog new tricks. ![]() Last edited by sirhunter2010; 04-17-2009 at 01:17 PM. |

I have that same model of Psyclone PSP charger, and it works for me. My only complaint is that the brick emits a high-pitched whine when it's plugged in.

Wow, thanks for the warning. I didn't open it yet, and will take it back because I'm sensitive to such noises.

I have the Psyclone and it doesn't make any noise... I suspect he got one perhaps with a bad filter capacitor or perhaps he has very dirty AC... Who knows...

I bought one of thoose cables but the devices (ebook and my cell phone) take longer to load with this then with a the regular USB cable. I measured the PSP/USB cable and found it has a very high electrical resistance compared to normal cables. Did i just get a bad one, or are others having similar problems?
