What Are You Watching

I finally watched Barbarian. It was okay; like many reviewers on imdb I liked the first half better than the second. It went from interesting idea to a cheap, watered down rip-off of a Richard Laymon book. I must say that I love Bill Skarsgard as a baddy, he can do creepy very good (It, John Wick 4). But I also like him as the good guy.

Since I don't seem to get into any tv series at the moment (except Will Trent) I've decided to focus on movies for a while. My watch list is huge so lets see how far I'll get this time.

Because there is apparently so little on, like an idiot, I did watch "Beyond Paradise," through episode six (6) last night.

Just shoot me.

I don't know what I was thinking. I should have known, from the ending of episode 5, that I was not going to like 6, and lo...had I thought that, I'd have been right.

If they renew this, I will be surprised.

That's all I'm gonna say--for those of you that are watching it or enjoying it, great, I shan't spoil it for you, but truly, I wanted to slap both the MCs. I felt as though I was watching a show featuring 12-14y.o.'s.

I was intrigued enough by the first couple of episodes of Chris O'Dowd's "The Big Door Prize" on Apple TV to continue. Same with "Shrinking" starring Jason Segel and Harrison Ford.

Wow. What a fiasco that was! I was embarrassed for both shows. I'm typically a sucker for crossovers, but "Beyond Paradise" hasn't even remotely earned the right to attempt one.

Yes, it was really, really BAD. I think even the lizard was ashamed. No wonder Harry walked away from him. Hard to blame him.

And it was so abrupt. This happens, then all this DRAMUH happens, then whats-is-face, Humph, runs away and then, Lo, everything is all resolved! Whut? I mean...if that's what they wanted to do, they should have had the big brouhaha at the end of epi 4, the DRAMUH in epi 5 and some sort of resolution in 6.

And all that nonsense about how he couldn't focus at work, like he was some big baby. I mean, gimme a break. He's not 12, he's what, early 40's????

I thought that the actor that played Selwyn must have been mortified. I hope he smacked them for some dough. OTOH, DIP isn't back, on our tellies, until 2024, I'm told. Yikes.

I'm currently watching "Kurt Vonnegut: Unstuck in Time". The 2021 documentary about Vonnegut's life by film maker Robert B. Weide. Filmed over a 25 year friendship with same.

Last week I watched a couple of good movies: John Wick 5 in cinema and The House on Haunted Hill (1959). But I also watched a couple of meh movies: Sick ("when Scream meets Covid") and The Endless, which was just confusing to me (that might be because I was tired when watching it).

Tonight my sister and I are going to see the Dungeons and Dragons movie in the cinema, we're going to see it in MX4D, which has moving seats and wind/mist/rain? effects.

Mr Hi and I watched Blacklist when it first came out, but I think it was the second season where the female star got preggers--maybe it was S3 and honestly, I couldn't take another moment of her.

It was as though the entire show revolved around her, rather than Spader and it was like..meh. Did it ever get better than that? (I think that they figured out, sometime later, that she couldn't carry a show by herself, by trying to run a second one, isn't that right?)

I went to see Dungeons & Dragon: Honor Among Thieves last night and I really loved it. Very action packed and funny. A reference to Critical Role was fun and there was a quick appearance of the characters of the 1983 animated TV series (which I was also obsessed with when it was aired years later in the Netherlands).

Hitch, the female star of 'Blacklist' got worse as the show continued, until eventually they got rid of her. It improved after that!

Well, hell, maybe I'll go look and see when that happened. Honestly, I get the needed a story focus (Spader) and a foil (that girl), an adversary, someone that causes "conflict" to make life easier for the storytellers/writers, but for crying out loud! If you actually pay attention to TV these days, especially the 1-hr programs, the endless amount of ridiculous "conflict" is just...I mean, like cops. There are no cops left who interview like, say, Foyle (Foyle's War, which we've just started re-watching). Calmly, without putting the suspect's back up. NOPE, they're all aggressive, "in your face" and on the suspect from the moment that they get them in their power/custody, whatever. Who does that? Again, it's all to create dramatic "conflict" and it's vacuous and unbelievable.

I got to the point--whatever season that was, before we turned it off, it was fairly early on--when the endless blather about--what was it, her MOTHER?--was so damned annoying we'd fast-forward through it, lol.
