So Lillith was created first and because she wasn't taking any guff and considered herself equal to a man Adam wasn't having any of it? And then she married Adams sons etc etc etc? Bet she was one tired lady.

And then who did the daughters marry?

Oh, my head hurts. I need to stop asking questions which really can't be answered.

Well, here was slayda's suggestion:

I was just riffing from that and saying Lilith flew off (as in the story I posted), spontaneously generated all these daughters, and they married the sons of Adam and Eve. (And possibly their sons as well, since it seems A&E only had male grandchildren.)

Edit: In some midrashim Lilith "cavorts" with demons and bears offspring called the "Lilim" which go around stealing babies. But then again, there are some other apocryphal stories about some angels hanging around Earth sleeping with humans, so it sounds like it depends on whose side you want to take.

But I take the whole story as a metaphorical reference to humanity choosing to start to "grow up" rather than have a deity take care of us all the time, which is rank heresy, so maybe you should just ignore me.

If only that were true, there might never be an argument about religions.

However, when you see the innocents suffer, and the wicked prosper, repeatedly, thru-out the ages, you kinda lose faith......

Lillith. I can't see the name without thinking of "Fraiser" and remembering that unforgettable character.....

Everyone always says that about Lilith, and I never saw the show, so I miss the reference completely.

Regarding the innocent suffering and the wicked prospering... is that because the deity no longer takes care of us, or people haven't grown up, or what? Just trying to figure out which way you're taking the discussion, here.

Oh dear God in heaven. I am not, repeat, NOT trying to start another argument. I'm just sayin'.........the faithful swear that prayers keep them 'safe'. That God protects the innocent.

Yet, they don't keep people 'safe'. And the innocent are usually the first to be thrown under the bus.

Yes, I know, "God works in mysterious ways, etc" I know all the arguments, for and against. I've heard them all ad nauseum.

And I don't think we've "grown up", Neko. Just look around. I"m sure anyone will agree that as a species, we have a long way to go.

If I've offended anyone, 3 hail Marys in pentinence. Still remember the rosary!

Didja hear of the little Irish boy who was naughty, and was made to go to confession by his Mama? The priest gave him three Hail Marys as penance, and when the priest left church later there was this little boyo on the church steps, crying, with tears and snot everywhere.

"What's up boyo" sez the priest.
"Fadder, you gave me three Hail Marys for penance."
"Yes" says the priest.

"Oh Fadder, I only know bloody one!!!!!"

Hey, I'm not interested in an argument either, and I wasn't trying to upset anyone! This is the Llounge, we don't do that here!

For what it's worth, I don't think prayers protect people (except maybe from their own negative emotions). And I don't think we've grown up yet either. What I meant was, if we want to grow up as a species, we can't be expecting a deity to keep cleaning up our messes. Quite the opposite: we need a consistent universe so we can get a handle on cause and effect.

Anyway, I'm not trying to defend this position, just explain what I meant.

I watched Les Enfants du Paradis (The Children of Pardise) recently and really enjoyed it. I'm sure I did not get all the nuances of the dialog but it was unique and thoroughly enjoyable. And a couple of the actors were fascinating. I just love variety.

They are fascinating! I had to see the cast from this intro of Les Enfants du Paradis. (about 5 minutes total)
