A Scribe could read a print replica. I don't know if Amazon allows this though.

No, they do no allow this. If you sideload it, it will open. My Oasis allows print replica to open if sideloaded. But it is not officially supported, so Amazon won't send it.

A mistake about the file type seems like the most likely explanation to me. We will probably never know unless CloudReader provides more information.

I've switched to jumping through the new hoop of 'download and transfer via USB' which has worked up until today.

I just purchased and downloaded an eBook (azw3 format) using that method, but when I drag it into Calibre I get the familiar "This book is locked by DRM."

I note that my e-ink Kindle (Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition) did not appear in the list of devices, only my Fire HD 10 tablet, and that I also cannot download the book on the physical Kindle.

It's probably for the best, as I've spent more money than I care to admit on books that I may/may not ever read, and have gotten many (thousands!) more completely free that I won't have enough time on this earth to be able to read.

My sentiments too and I never have and likely won't ever buy/own a Kindle reader. I use an old version of the app. However, books published before January 03, 2023 should still work for you, yes?

I started out with a Kindle Keyboard and still use a PW2. I like that a mere twitch of my thumb will turn the page. If I have to go back a page, I have to lift my left hand - the effort is exhausting! - and turn the page back. Not to mention the inconvenience of needing to put down my beverage or sustenance of choice.
Watching The Husband read is a bit of an amusing and eye-rolling experience for real. He likes to put his free arm down as he reads, then lifts it, makes a pointy finger, and *pock* taps the screen to turn the page. Every few seconds...*pock*...

So which is better? Reading a print book or reading from a device ?
