The color reader looks good, but I think it's all about affordable content. I once had an Apple IIGS. Theoretically it was a great computer. Alas, the programs I wanted to use were all written for Windows. So far the content I want at the price I want to pay is mostly at Amazon.
The cost of the device is also an issue. Even though my Prius doubled my gas mileage, it will be a long long time before the gas saving make up for what I paid for the car. Likewise since I got my Kindle, I haven't saved money on books. I've just been able to read some best sellers sooner than I would have otherwise because normally I would have waiting until the paperback came out. So I'm really annoyed with publishers who think they can charge hardback prices for an ebook even after the paperback has come out. |

It actually does 3 refreshes: first 64 colors, then 4096, then the full 200k. The screen's readable after the first refresh. The Bridgestone display is way, way better as a user experience, incidentally. Saw my first one yesterday. |

Many technical books are often printed horizontally and read from left to right like English books but all the Japanese novels I've seen have been printed so the characters are lined vertically going top to bottom and reading the lines from right to left. Since Japanese people would likely be using the device to read novels, reading from right to left, it would make sense to have the next line they read to be refreshed first. |

From my limited knowledge, technical writing and hence reading is l->r, horizontal.. This device at 90K Yens~1000$ is targeted at business users not people who read novels(though it can be used for that obviously). |

Japanese can be written either vertically right to left (used in books, magazines, manga etc) or "western" way, left to right horizontally, used in newspapers, manuals and online.
Electronic readers can usually switch between two modes. |
