Early one morning, Lilah Beardon finds her father drowned on his own farm. The police assume his death was a tragic accident.

But Lilah isn’t convinced. She knew her father better than anyone, and a clumsy accident doesn’t seem likely.

Everyone else in this pretty village hated the crabby old farmer: from his neglected wife Miranda, to the parish vicar . . . but is one of the villagers a cold-blooded killer?

Working alongside the handsome but bumbling Detective Constable Den Cooper, Lilah is determined to uncover the truth.

And then another body is discovered . . . Will Lilah be able to crack the case before she becomes the killer’s next target?

Catriona McPherson's Dandy Gilver and a Deadly Measure of Brimstone, now actually just titled A Deadly Measure of Brimstone, is $0.99 in the US. Oh yeah, and it's the eighth in the Dandy Gilver series...

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IQNYX2E
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/a-d...e-of-brimstone

Spoiler:
Quote:
Catriona McPherson's critically acclaimed mystery series set in 1920s Scotland and featuring plucky and laugh-out-loud-funny heroine Dandy Gilver is perfect for fans of PG Wodehouse, Dorothy L Sayers, and Agatha Christie.

In A Deadly Measure of Brimstone, Dandy and the whole Gilver clan travel to a spa town for a weekend of relaxation which is quickly interrupted by a slew of mysterious— and deadly—events.

The men of the Gilver family have come down, between them, with influenza, bronchitis, pneumonia and pleurisy. The family repairs to the town of Moffat, there to submit to the galvanic wraps and cold salt rubs of the splendid Laidlaw Hydropathic Hotel.

But all is not well at the Hydro, and the secret of the lady who arrived but never left cannot be kept for long. And what of those drifting shapes in the Turkish bath? Just steam shifting in the air? Probably. But in this town the dead can be as much trouble as the living.

City on Fire by Don Winslow is $3.99 at Amazon, Kobo and B&N US.

Quote:
Two criminal empires together control all of New England.

Until a beautiful woman comes between the Irish and the Italians, launching a war that will see them kill each other, destroy an alliance, and set a city on fire.

Danny Ryan yearns for a more “legit” life and a place in the sun. But as the bloody conflict stacks body on body and brother turns against brother, Danny has to rise above himself. To save the friends he loves like family and the family he has sworn to protect, he becomes a leader, a ruthless strategist, and a master of a treacherous game in which the winners live and the losers die.

From the gritty streets of Providence to the glittering screens of Hollywood to the golden casinos of Las Vegas, two rival crime families ignite a war that will leave only one standing. The winner will forge a dynasty.

Exploring the classic themes of loyalty, betrayal, and honor, City on Fire is a contemporary masterpiece in the tradition of The Godfather, Casino, and Goodfellas—a thrilling saga from Don Winslow, “America’s greatest living crime writer” (Jon Land, Providence Journal).

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09C64BFM3

Legendary detective V.I. Warshawski uncovers a nefarious conspiracy preying on Chicago’s weak and vulnerable, in this thrilling novel from New York Times bestseller Sara Paretsky

On her way home from an all-night surveillance job, V.I. Warshawski’s dogs lead her on a mad chase that ends when they discover a badly injured teen hiding in the rocks along Lake Michigan. The girl only regains consciousness long enough to utter one enigmatic word. V.I. helps bring her to a hospital, but not long after, she vanishes before anyone can discover her identity. As V.I. attempts to find her, the detective uncovers an ugly consortium of Chicago powerbrokers and mobsters who are prepared to kill the girl. And now V.I.’s own life is in jeopardy as well.

Told against the backdrop of a city emerging from its pandemic lockdown, Overboard lays bare the dark secrets and corruption buried in Chicago’s neighborhoods in a masterly fashion.

Random Acts, by JA Jance, bills itself as a Joanna Brady and Ali Reynolds novella, and it's on sale for $1.99 at Kindle and Kobo US today.

Kindle US: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019MMUAXS
Kobo US: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/random-acts-7

Spoiler:
Quote:
From New York Times bestselling author J. A. Jance comes an all-new novella, in which Sheriff Joanna Brady and investigator Ali Reynolds join forces to solve a crime that has hit dangerously close to home

Sheriff Joanna Brady has a lot on her plate—she is up for re-election as sheriff, pregnant with her third child, and her eldest is packing up to leave for college. Then Joanna is woken in the middle of the night by a call reporting a motor vehicle accident. Her mother and stepfather’s RV ran off the road at high speed and hit the pillar of an overpass.

Something about the accident seems suspicious, though, and when Joanna gets a call from Ali Reynolds, a journalist turned investigator, she accepts her offer to help. They come up with a plan to find out who was responsible…even if that person is not the villain they’d expected.

The Girl, the Gold Watch & Everything by John D. MacDonald is $4.99 at Amazon, Kobo and B&N US. $5 is pricey for a deal, but I've not seen it drop any lower.

Quote:
Once an ordinary math teacher, Omar Krepps developed a knack for gambling, amassed a fabulous fortune, and spent the rest of his life traveling the world and giving away his millions. Upon his death, however, Krepps bequeaths nothing to his nephew and only living blood relative, Kirby Winter—nothing, that is, except an antique watch and a sealed letter to be opened after one year.

But Kirby has much more in his possession than he realizes. The watch has the power to manipulate time. Not only does this revelation shed light on the mystery of his uncle’s life, it puts Kirby on the path to unimaginable wealth and a new lease on love . . . as well as a whole host of deadly troubles. Even in a universe where time is no issue, Kirby must tread carefully to stay one step ahead of danger.

A Gentle Murderer by Dorothy Salisbury Davis is a classic psychological mystery, which is not usually my favorite thing. However, I had an ARC of the re-issued e-book version not too long ago, and surprised myself by liking it. It's just really well plotted and written IMO, even if I'm not generally fond of the genre. It's on sale right now in the US for $1.99, and it's discountable at Kobo US. Note that there are two versions - this is the Open Road version, and not the Poisoned Pen Press/Library of Congress one, so check the price carefully before you buy.

Quote:
On a hot Saturday night in Manhattan, Father Duffy sits in a confessional, growing alarmed as he listens to the voice of a distraught young man who speaks of bloody hair and a dead woman and a compulsion to do things with a hammer that he does not understand. Before the priest can persuade the man to confess to the police, the killer flees, still clutching the hammer.

The next day, Father Duffy learns that a high-class call girl on the East Side has been savagely murdered, and no suspect has been found. As he searches for the disturbed young man who he fears will kill again, cerebral New York Police detective Sergeant Ben Goldsmith takes the lead in the investigation of the call-girl murder, racing against the clock to catch a very clever killer who, when enraged, cannot control his need to swing a hammer.
