Oh, that's a good idea. I remember I was all over Bulfinch's Mythology, which IS available as an ebook. It had 3 parts. Age of Fable, Age of Chivalry and Legend of Charlemagne. I loved the first 2 parts. Hercules and Theseus and Jason & the Argonauts and all the monsters. And King Arthur and the knights from Age of Chivalry. That led me to a childrens edition of Le Morte D'arthur.

oh, King Arthur made me think of a couple more kid's books I read back then. Walter Farley's The Black Stallion (long before the movie) and Jim Kjelgaard's Big Red (after Disney made a movie of it).

I just searched for Gods and Heroes of Ancient Greece by Gustav Schwab, but it's not available in e-format, even though the translation is from the early 1940s.

But, there is a compilation named Myths and Legends of All Nations, which includes an excerpt, here on mobileread:

I'll definitely have to check that one out soon, thanks.

As for King Arthur, yes! Seconded! I was totally a knight on that round table as a kid.

Look for Lloyd Alexander's Prydain series. The first book is The Book of Three; it should be entirely suitable for an 8-year-old. As the protagonist grows up, the books become more complex; they are aimed at readers whose age is similar to (or at least close to) that of the protagonist. Thus, the fifth book in the series is probably really aimed at teens rather than younger children. The second book in the series was a Newberry Honor book; the fifth and final book won the Newberry Medal.

Really good stuff. Highly recommended for adult readers as well (with the caveat that the early books clearly show their focus on younger readers). Not available in legal ebook editions that I can find.

Goodness - no Mobipocket version here at Mobileread. Only LRF:

LRF is what I need for my Sony though.

Thanks pdurrant

Second Narnia series which I know is available.
Also second the Arthur Ransome series (Swallows) and the Enid Blyton's Secret Seven and Famous Five.
Would also add Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing and Superfudge both by Judy Blume and anything by Roald Dahl (Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach, Danny Champion of the World, Matilda, Fantastic Mr. Fox etc.) and any fairy tale collections (Hans Christian Anderson or Grimm Brothers) that you can find.
