Updated the original post.
Right now my healths on one of those downturns so I have limited time/energy/spoons for privately answering questions that could be posted in this thread. Thanks ![]() Last edited by ownedbycats; 03-06-2023 at 07:19 PM. |

It looks my previous concern about censorship just hit ebooks everywhere. From an article at goodereader.com
"Ronald Dahl ebooks being updated automatically with censored versions" With DRM in place, you don't have any protection against whatever comes into the minds of those with the keys. |

And yet it does. If you can't crack the DRM, you can't protect what you purchased. And crippling the device seems like a bad answer since you may want to purchase another book.
In this case, DRM enables censorship. |

P.S. it is funny you copied the misspelled headline (the article looks ok). Did you even read past the headline? Last edited by DuckieTigger; 03-06-2023 at 09:47 PM. |

Since I don't use a kindle, I don't know how fine grained the updates are. Can you turn it of for a single book? If so, how would you know which ones to turn it off for? If I purchased a good copy and then saved it to my private library, then if/when the vendor "fixes" it with a censored version, I still have what I bought. |

No, government is the ONLY entity that is allowed to do censorship. Amazon is free to sell what they wish (if it is legal to sell). They also are under no obligation to sell everything. They have the right to not sell something they don't want to.

While that is essentially what the "contract" says when you purchase something that is DRMed, contract law should not recognized a unilateral change to a contract as being valid. DRM should have been ruled invalid years ago, but our courts are no better than our vendors. |
