Oasis3 is still convinced it has the correct file, can be returned to KU. Will disappear on the PW1 as well.

All looks good, should be even better when pulling the complete book out of the KT.
Then I'll test it after editing the KF8 and see what happens.

Updated the original post.

Right now my healths on one of those downturns so I have limited time/energy/spoons for privately answering questions that could be posted in this thread.

Thanks

It is too bad you have to edit it again, because jhowell fixed the AZW6merge plugin to work correctly when importing from a PW1. It now gives all images, but in B/W.

It looks my previous concern about censorship just hit ebooks everywhere. From an article at goodereader.com

"Ronald Dahl ebooks being updated automatically with censored versions"

With DRM in place, you don't have any protection against whatever comes into the minds of those with the keys.

Well, there's always turning off automatic updates.

And then the fact that DRM has nothing to do with it.

And yet it does. If you can't crack the DRM, you can't protect what you purchased. And crippling the device seems like a bad answer since you may want to purchase another book.

In this case, DRM enables censorship.

How is turning off the automatic updates (for books!!!!) crippling your ereader? If the rights holder decides they won't sell the old version any longer, and only sell a new, edited version, then there is nothing you can do about it. You don't have the right to purchase the old version, unless you find a second hand paper book. With ebooks there is no such thing as second hand. If you purchased the old version, and you want to keep it, turn off automatic updates.

P.S. it is funny you copied the misspelled headline (the article looks ok). Did you even read past the headline?

Not all updates are bad. There are enough typos etc. that getting updates is usually a good things.

Since I don't use a kindle, I don't know how fine grained the updates are. Can you turn it of for a single book? If so, how would you know which ones to turn it off for?

If I purchased a good copy and then saved it to my private library, then if/when the vendor "fixes" it with a censored version, I still have what I bought.

That is why it is called automatic updates. If you turn it off, you can see in your library which books have an update available. And update manually each individual book. There is never censorship involved - censorship is governmental overreach. Apparently you should never trust any publishers that are known not to honor authors wishes, especially when said author is already dead.

Governmental overreach is certainly a form of censorship, but why would you limit it to govermental action? Amazon is quite capable of censoring things and they are not (yet) a government.

No, government is the ONLY entity that is allowed to do censorship. Amazon is free to sell what they wish (if it is legal to sell). They also are under no obligation to sell everything. They have the right to not sell something they don't want to.

They do not (or at least should not) have the right to change the deal after the sale.

While that is essentially what the "contract" says when you purchase something that is DRMed, contract law should not recognized a unilateral change to a contract as being valid.

DRM should have been ruled invalid years ago, but our courts are no better than our vendors.

Which is a b*tch if you have over 5000 books as I do because Amazon refuses to allow us to filter by available updates nor do they consistently send an email alert, meaning you have to either look up your book in your purchases or allow automatic updates. Some author newsletters will tell you if a revised version comes out, but most do not.

Brain dump: what would an Amazon edition of Monopoly look like?

By what logic? The technology didn't exist with paper books. You can opt out, so nothing is forced. Your lawyer is going to have a really tough time explaining how it is unilateral when you are able to prevent it.

Nobody said it has to be convenient. Tell me when the last time a book update was really necessary and meaningful. Turn updates off. Treat them like paper books. If you read it, and there is a bunch of typos, check if there's an update.
