I did once thought to add device specific settings in the CSS, but never could figured out how to determine that the epub was processed on a kobo device. It should be possible, however.

Ah, well during coding some parameter initial default value setting might be in order (orphans=void), which is then updated during the program run (recalculated somehow), then updated by reading program invocation arguments, then updated by reading configuration files, then updated by reading files to be processed, etc.
So in this case it could be orphans=2 and remain that until it is overridden, if ever.

That is interesting as I, too, have the above set in my Kobo config file but it seems to be ineffective with O & W set to 1 in the body. DrChiper's suggestion has solved the problem in a couple of books (so far).

So far it's working for me. Did you remove the existing w & o values from the css?

The few I am experimenting with have no existing o & w, other than those I have in the body. The application to the <p> tag(s) I understand but I am a bit fuzzy on exactly which (all?) <div> tags should be edited.

If I understand this correctly, when having orphans/widows in the kobo config file settings AND in the CSS <body> definition they cancel each other out? That's odd. Or, possibly, they are added to each other resulting in O/W=2 which certainly disrupt the expected behavior..

Nope. I have had this exact setting on 3 Kobos now and it works as intended. Why it seems not to work for Skydog is a mystery to me.

Imagine my frustration when I have always had both settings, body and Kobo config, include O & W = 1 yet still experience large variations of the bottom margin from page to page. Adding another instance in <p> is the only time I have seen the correct result. All are sideloaded epubs from Kobo or converted azw3.
