Amazon and DRM changes - Page 109

I tried that before I bought the new (old) kindle. I can't get it to download on my version of K4PC (1.19). As I understand it, if I upgrade to the new version of K4PC I will be able to download the book but it will still be in a format I can't get deDRMd into Calibre to convert so I can put it on my Kobo reader (which is my preferred reading device). Is there something I'm missing?

It has nothing to do with K4PC. Go to your Amazon content and devices page in the web browser, where all your Amazon purchases are listed. Click on More Actions - > Download & Transfer via USB. Note that this option is there only for the purchased books, not for KU loans.

Sirtel was talking about "Download and Transfer via USB" option availlable from the Amazon webpage (not from K4PC. On purchases it downloads a azw3 file, which you can import into calibre if you have added your serial number into the plugin.

Thank you both. I have never used the download and transfer via USB function before but I've worked it out now. That worked. Thank you so much for your help!

It's possible to get the books files from a non-jailbroken Paperwhite 2. But KFX format won't be decryptable. You'd need a Kindle that doesn't support KFX format at all to decrypt books downloaded directly to it.

Why would you want to? Just use K4PC or download and transfer instead.

Because I'm pretty sure it's a matter of time before Amazon closes the loophole of the "Download and Transfer" button and I'd like to have a backup for when that happens.

And if they also cut off older Kindles outright or force them into firmware upgrade?

Switch to a different eStore... but I think that completely cutting-off older devices is less likely. They may also not completely remove the Download and Transfer button but rather have it download a KFX if your device supports it.

I don't know anything about jailbreaking and downgrading Kindles. Never saw any compelling reason to do so.

Another thing about getting ancient Kindles...you know these things wear out, right?

Yup, I'm in Michigan. That metal back Nook was the model I skipped.

So they will cut off download and transfer, but keep supporting a Kindle running older firmware than it is capable of running? Makes no sense to me.

The Nook (like all my readers) is in a case, so I'm not holding the metal back either. And the quote was cut. My point was that the reader had an Oasis build quality at a Paperwhite price. One of the nicest readers I own.
