whenever trying to find some sort of idea of what a public domain book is about, but the description always something like "This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important...". Argh!

Or Goodreads simply has a link to a paid Amazon version. Then the blurb on Amazon simply says how they've republished this classic work (meaning we stripped out most of the Gutenberg specific stuff, didn't bother doing anything else, spent 5 mins on a cover image and uploaded via KDP). Definitely my main reading rant today.

If it's a better known PD work then Wikipedia might be useful. Or maybe fadedpage. Gutenberg & archive org tell you nothing, though I might flip through a bit of the HTML version on Gutenberg.

There must be a rule somewhere that the cover art for a cozy mystery contains some cute dog or cat, even if the pet in question barely appears in the narrative.

I've not been co-habiting with cats since I got Internet so I get a different selection of covers.

Though I could rant about the new covers on older books. The House of Random Penguins are the worst offenders, but they may be currently distracted from this due to a large ghostly crocodile stalking the hallways.

I remember switching from 20" CRT to a flat panel.
One of my cats would jump onto the CRT as soon as my butt hit the desk chair.
Oooo! was she surprised when there was only a tiny edge for her paws.
Boy did I get the stink eye.

Specific to physical books: Ones that are a weird size. It messes up my shelves.

Prices for ebooks annoys me and the long wait for a library copy even more annoying. $17.99 for a new release? If it turns out to be a crappy book you wasted money. I tried to rent prince Harry's book from the library and it had a 2 year wait list so I caved in and bought it. it was a snooze fest.

I'm fortunate my library does a good job with buying multiple licenses for popular e-books. I got on the wait list for Spare before it was released. The day of release I had a 40+ week wait, 3 days later they sent me the notice it was available to borrow. They have (and still have) 288 copies at that point.
