What Are You Watching

I've been (re)watching paranormal show on Discover+ this last week. I just can't find anything I'm really interested in at the moment. On the one hand I really want to start with The Traitors (UK), which I recorded a while ago, but I just can't get myself to start it.

I might try some movies tonight.

I’m still watching Father Brown, but it’s mostly hate watching at this point. What made the show good originally, Father Brown’s use of psychology and logic to arrive at a solution and moral issues at odds with legality are largely in abeyance.

Anachronisms abound, a combination of 21st century sensibilities and laziness. I was watching the Christmas episode from season six last night and Father Brown referred to the stricture against lying as the ninth commandment. No. Catholics and Lutherans number the commandments differently from Anglicans and other Protestants and lying is number eight. Can’t they have someone vet the script for this kind of mistake? I know it’s not important but that makes it worse, not better. Why not get what you can right, since there are always going to be clangers that are plot-induced?

Anyway, that was it for me for the evening and I was only about 15 minutes into the episode.

It didn't get that bad for me with Father Brown, but I understand the notion of "hate watching" completely.

I thought they did a fairly good job with the show. The Belter patois was occasionally over the top in my opinion, but otherwise...

It was kind of a low-budget cast - too bad it didn't have Amazon bucks behind it at the outset.

I watched another episode of Astrid last night. I have two more episodes for series 1. There was an interesting American Experience show (PBS) last night about the history of the Monopoly board game. I was getting sleepy while watching, so I have about 20 more minutes to watch of it. (Also I dropped a glass of water, caught it but a lot spilled on my little table and had to clean it up before I went to bed.)

Yea, that was one thing I disliked about the novels, that broken English Belter talk annoyed me, so I ended up just skipping through those parts.


I am enjoying the tv show so far, more than I did the novels. Up to S01E05.

I was just in hospital again (don't ask, sigh) and of all things, they only have local channels and the local PBS had a FR. Brown epi from about 7 years ago, with Lady Felicity and Sid and Fr. Brown and I was...reminded, forcibly, just how GOOD those were compared to today.

Has anybody noticed a change in writers, or producers, or...?

Here's a Pro Tip: guess what? Cellulitis is a possible side effect of, yes, you got it, Shingles. Damn, folks, trust me, get the bl**ding shot. I would never say that the Cellulitis was as painful as the Shingles, but Holy Cow, it's a close damn second.

Oh, I’m sorry!

And, when I first started watching Father Brown I had to ration myself as I had only six Hoopla borrows per month and I needed two or three as audiobooks. Then there were borrows left at the end of the month. (Full disclosure: now I’ve got a Stark library card and more Hoopla borrows each month than I could ever use. Such a deal — I hope they never sit down and crunch those numbers on the out-of-staters.) All shows run their course, but Father Brown tanked earlier than necessary.
