Hope You're Right
Guess we'll see--I have a used e-ink on the way. However, the Fire link worked just fine for about 30+ books until yesterday (Saturday 2/18) so let's say I am concerned until I can verify it myself.

If you chose a Fire for download & transfer and it "worked", the books were already DRM-free. Those downloaded for an E-ink Kindle can be decrypted.

Not in My Experience
I just received an e-ink Kindle Paperwhite Generation 7. The USB download behaves the same way on the e-ink as it did on the fire. The book is loaded, but DRM is still embedded so you are unable to convert it to any other format.
As I said before, I do not believe that so-called "Option 3" works reliably anymore. The book I am testing with is: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...w_myk_ro_title If I knew what criteria makes a book incompatible with Calibre then I could still buy books in an emergency, but for now I can't depend on being able to load a purchase into Calibre. Calibre and all the usual plugins are up to the latest version no. Last edited by johnelle; 02-21-2023 at 12:44 PM. |

I wish...
So my DRM plugin does have the serial numbers configured for both the eink machine and the V1 Fire but that doesn't work for either "add file" (i.e. automatic) or "load from device").
I believe that the problem is that my Paperwhite is too new. The firmware is 5.14.3.0.1 and the documentation says that it has to be 5.10.2 or older. The Fire also has a S/N but that behaves the same way for me. So to try and be precise: option 3 only works on recently published books if you have a very old e-ink Kindle (and you can imagine they eventually will shut that off too). |

Not true. I have bought several ebooks published after January 3, with DRM, and the DRM removal (configured for the 2017 Oasis, 9th generation) worked for every one of them. I tried with the book you linked in your post, and it worked. So something must be wrong with your setup.

...and your S/N is??
Well I guess we can quibble what "older" means but my firmware is definitely newer than what the documentation says is a supported level for deDRM whereas the physical device itself is "well used."
Configuration was pretty simple. Hit the configure button. Hit the Kindle button and enter the serial nos. Also restarted Calibre just to make sure it was loading the latest. Confirmed that my plugin is up to date. Don't know what an Oasis is. I keep up with my mom's paperwhite but that's about the only Kindle in use in our family (Samsung Tablet is my preference) |

The Fire is using an App. It doesn't work. All Fire models, even if old and having Kindle in the name are not Kindles, they are an Amazon version of an Android tablet with an app.
The absolute newest real eink kindles and newest books work if they are bought & downloaded via Content & Devices.. Borrowed books do not work. It doesn't work copying off the Kindle. You have to download direct from Amazon website Content & Devices to a NOT kindle or NOT Fire, using a Browser. |

So the problem is something about what you're doing or your setup. Ask over at the GitHub, and I'll see what's going on. |

The book is also available for free on Kobo. (Oddly, it's 3.99 on ebooks.com.)

Working after Plugin Reinstall / Reconfigure from scratch
Deleted the plugin. Downloaded .zip. Reinstalled. Deleted S/N of Paperwhite and re-entered it.
Now it worked. This book is one of those that Kindle app won't download unless I do an update (no thanks). The transfer via Paperwhite link is compatible with the plugin and can be converted. Not sure what was going on before. |
